I haven't, but just generally using my iPhone's spirit level, I've put it down on a flat surface, had it read 0°, picked it up, put it back down, and had it read 1° and vice versa, so I'm skeptical of how consistently precise the iPhone or other cell phone can be at this stuff.

My only concern is that the imperfections in the green can tilt or not tilt the phone enough to get an accurate reading.

From what I heard these apps can have some big error in their values.

So, quick follow up: I was at the putting green last night and it was getting dark, so I downloaded it to work on feeling the break since I couldn't really see the break well (and I'm terrible at reading greens anyway). I hastily calibrated it on a garbage can which was the flattest and most level surface I could find. Once I got a feel for what the relative differences were between the various degrees of break, I have to say, I was blown away at how helpful and consistent it was at predicting putting line. Even moving it a foot right to left at one point identified a subtle ridge that caused putts to move in opposite directions. One downside is I left the screen on in my pocket while going to hit some bunker shots afterwards and it killed my battery on my iPhone 6. Regardless, and it was a limited sample, the app worked way better than I thought it would.

Sounds tedious to get your phone out on every green to get a read but then again I putt really fast after pacing the distance, taking one look at the line, one practice swing, and GO.

I compared the readings from these types of apps to those from a Husky digital level and found discrepancies. I'll use level apps for projects around the house but not for golf.

Well, in fairness, you would only use it in practice. Can't really use it in a round since it'd be against rules. Or as low a value I put on my fix it/home improvement abilities. :-)

    • Day 430 - 2025-12-04 Slow motion backswings (with chippy shots) with AlmostGolf balls.
    • Day 24 (4 Dec 25) - Spent about an hour working with the new 55° wedge in the backyard.  Kept all shots to under 20yds.  Big focus - not decelerating thru downswing and keeping speed up with abbreviated backswing.  Nothing like hitting a low flighted chip with plenty of check spin and then purpose to float a pitch of similar distance.
    • Day 114 12-4 Put some work in on backswing, moving the hips correctly, then feeling over to lead side. Didn't hit any balls was just focused on keeping flowy and moving better. I'll probably do another session tonight and add in some foam balls.
    • Didn't say anything about your understanding in my post.  Well, if you are not insisting on alignment with logic of the WHS, then no.  Try me/us. What do you want from us then?? You are not making sense. You come here and post in an open forum, question a system that is constructed with logic, without using any of your own and then give us a small window of your personal experience to support your narrative which at first sight does not makes sense.  I mean, if you are a point of swearing then I would suggest you cut your losses and humor a more gullible audience elsewhere. Good heavens.
