Why are Drivers in half degrees?

This question isn't as relevant now with all the adjustable drivers. But why are most drivers 9.5* instead of 9* or 10* or 11.5* instead of 11* or 12*? There has to be a reason, right?

Hm. That's a good question. I guess it's because that half degree can make a difference, but if I really had to give a concrete answer, I'd probably stray more towards what @Jon Hoover said about there being more to sell.

I'd bet that the marketing geniuses have decided that the decimal point makes it seem more scientific or more precise.  In engineering, there's a difference in the implied precision between 9 and 9.0, but they don't want to use 9.0 because it seems pedantic.  Therefore, they go with the half-degrees.

That's a complete guess on my part, as far as I know it has no basis in reality, but its the best guess I can make

Considering how large the tolerances are on driver lofts they should just call them 9-ish, 10-ish and 12-ish.

Correct, stock non tour driver heads have loose tolerances. Misses above or below equator may as well be +/-2.
