AP2 or Apex?

Just won an accumulator bet at the weekend so I’m going to treat myself to a new set of irons. I play 2-3 times a week and play off 14. I currently have a set of Mizuno JPX800s and want to step up to hit some players’ irons. I’ve been at the range trying the Titleist AP2s and Callaway Apex Pro. There’s not a lot to separate them in my eyes other than that I love the way the AP2s look. I’m also aware that the new 716 line of AP2s are due out soon. I hit the ball fairly high and long, with a fast swing. I’m leaning towards the AP2s but I’ve read that the Callaways are more forgiving and longer. Anyone got a set of either with some advice/recommendations? I’m going to have a fitting session but would like to get some info from people that have the clubs. Thanks in advance.

I've had my AP-2's for almost two seasons now, and I really like them.  My previous set was Mizuno MP30, so the move  to the AP2 was towards a slightly more forgiving club.  I'm hitting the ball just a little higher than with the old clubs, and based on observations at my fitting, this is probably due primarily to the KBS shafts. I don't think you can really go wrong, especially if you work with a competent fitter.

Have you considered other products from Mizuno?

MP-54 seems like a really nice choice. I've only tested the MP-54 at the shop but have the MP-52 (basically the same club as the 54) that are really consistent and offer a nice high flight even with DG-S300 shafts.

Hands down I would go with the AP2's. They are geared more towards lower handicaps but I'm sure you would still like them. Plus they hold value if you ever wanted to sell them a few years down the road. Also give the AP1's a try on the range. They are very forgiving irons and still very solid sticks for lower handicaps. Ive had my 2008 AP1's for 7 years and i still love them!

The local range doesn't stock Mizuno, but I fancied changing brand anyway after playing mizunos for a few years. I might go further afield to test them though.

The AP1 were really sweet when I tested them out. I tested a used demo set in a local shop recently with DG-S300 shafts in them. They feel about the same as the MP-52.

If you want the smaller head and thinner top line, I would go with the AP1 rather than AP2.

Someone has to speak up for them: the Apex Pro is the best club I've ever hit and I'd play them over any other if given the chance. Love everything about it.

I hit the Apex, not the Apex Pro.  Great irons with additional distance and height.  As you are a fourteen hc, don't overlook that you can get the pro line irons in your scoring clubs and game improvement irons in your other irons.  I don't see how you can go wrong with either of the brands you mentioned.

That's backwards Lihu...the AP2 is the thinner top line. BTW, I do love my AP2's but they take a backseat to my Ping S55's.

I disagree. The MP-52 is going to be more comparable to the AP2. I don't think the AP1 and MP-52 are anything alike, other than both being irons

Regarding the mp-52 vs ap2, I would say the Titleist is a little bit more forgiving.

Possibly, even with very little experience with the clubs I tested, I was getting really good results almost immediately with the Titleist.

I really like my MP-52 now, though. Although, most of the time I still use the MP-32.

I loved my mp-52s, they were great clubs. I have mp-58s now that I bought a few years ago but just started playing them this year. I think had I not had them I might have gone with the ap2

I have AP2 714's. Love them.

Perfect balance of forgiveness vs feel/feedback, IMO.

And they look good too.
