I have been fighting off the tee woes for 10 years . Absolutely no consistency . Plus , I developed  a horrible pause at the top of my backswing , trying to "load up . "  Yesterday at the range , I tried something drastic . I set up with driver , so that my arms were extended fully , away from my body  ( somewhat Moe Norman like  ) . Then I started a full shoulder turn , BUT  stopped my backswing  at 3 oclock, with NO wrist cock , my hands extended straight out , away from the target .  I was shocked , as drive after drive went straight , no over the top, hook , or slice . Granted I did lose some distance , but at my age , 65 , Ill take 210 down the fairway any day . I know I'll look very weird on the course , but who cares ?  Anyone else ever experimented with this ?  The more moving parts I eliminate , the better . I just swung hard , and off she went .

Get a video. Bet it shows more wrist action than you think and arms in better position at the top of the backswing. (Just my guess based on the fact that a lot of us overswing and it takes something like that to get it to where it should be.) It might not look as strange as you think.

+1 Feel ain't real. I feel like I stop the backswing short of the top and it's not when I look at it on video.

Ditto what I thought felt like a half swing had me in a John Daly like position at the top when I saw the vids. Even when I was doing drills to prevent it I was usually moving more than I should have. Still don't have it right and I started working on it June 2014.

I like the shorter swing for control but find I get big pulls or worse pulled draws when I don't use enough wrist cock.

Being older now, I don't have near the flexibility that I once have, hence a much shorter back-swing.  I give up distance that I once had, but I hit the ball much straighter and with more control than I once did.

A good drive for me is bout 230 or so.  Average is prolly 215 or so.  But I am usually in the fairway.  Irons are not real strong either but fairly straight with a solid true divot.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
