Offset for better players is often a dirty word akin to shank! Modern clubs generally have little or a lot of offset. The whole idea is to help hackers square the face and get a little lead on their shot. For good players however it makes the ball go left everytime or very low as some gamers really go after it and get a lot of shaft lead already.

What's your opinion here I think any club that is designed to make a bad swing work will only let you keep making a bad swing without improving. The only instance where help is needed for golfers is when the shot's need forgiveness like drivers, some hybrids and fairway woods which are already taxing enough on marginal misses.

It would seem you already created on this subject before (see above)

I did a post on this a while back (2013, and in the math there is no significant difference in how the club is presented at impact. If the two swings were identical and all that was changed was the offset then the change in face angle because impact is delayed due that the club is not fractions of an inch further back is minimal at best and most likely negligible.

All offset does is cause a person to typically want to aim the club left to compensate for how it visual sits at the ball.

You don't need to remember. You can use the search functionality. I'll merge the threads.

I've been playing Callaway Big Bertha's for a few years now - they have a pretty noticeable offset.  I am contemplating moving into a set of Mizuno MP-53's . which have a lot less offset.  I've been going back and forth between them a lot - I can't say the offset makes any difference except at address . . the offset makes me "want" to aim left . . which has become a bit annoying.

EDIT . . Actually, I don't know if "aim left" is quite right . .the Big Berthas make setting up for a draw more comfortable.

Would offset work better for a "sweeper" and less well for a "digger" or viceversa???

Well, I am more of a sweeper (take minimal divot with an iron) and my sticks are offset and I love them. Since I have my new offset clubs I am a MUCH better ball striker.

Not sure if that helps or not but going to more offset has helped me a good bit.

Offset is purely a visual thing.

That isn't to say a golfer will adjust to the offset in their own personal way with their swing. If that is good or bad it depends. I have no clue if it benefits a sweeper versus a digger.

Mostly bounce and grind on wedges are more definable by the type of path the club takes in that regard.

  • 2 weeks later...

I played heavy offsets for years, they worked great, but I'll never go back. After switching over I found that offset clubs make me pull or hook the ball.

I will say that low irons seem a bit easier to hit though.
