Think I might have figured out why I hit my irons shorter than I should...

Hi Guys, Lately I've been smoking it with the Driver... I mean crushing it... And I was thinking why do I hit my driver 260 yards and my 6-iron 160-165 yards... I've been kind of messing around with my ball position, even swinging easier... No luck... Today kind of by accident, I think I discovered why I've been hitting weak iron shots... I think out of habit, I stand too close to the ball (I'm 6'5", so its kind of natural)... I noticed it hitting balls, my weight was too much on my heels, and there is no way I can get my weight over... So just experimenting, I kept my ball position the same and started creeping back away from the ball a little, until I felt as if I had to put my weight on the balls of my feet. It worked. Instantly, I was 1 club longer. Somehow I manage to keep a 9.9 Handicap Index, not hitting wedges well, or hitting my irons as far as I should this may make a difference... Here's my question, for TST Universe... Do you think my iron swing could have been too upright? I know you want to hit down on the ball, but do you think I was too steep standing as close as I was. As always, Thanks for input in advance... P.S. I think I've been doing this with my driver lately...

Do you carry your driver 260 or 240 plus 20 yards of roll? If it's total distance, then carrying your 6i 160-165 is about right. . .

Carry 260, don't get 20 yards of roll usually, I hit it too high, so like 275 total...

Doesn't mean no roll depending upon what you mean by too high?

My descent angle is way too steep, I get like 10-15 yards of run, that and I hit a fade, usually... But I was hitting baby draws with my irons earlier to moving a little away from the ball...

You know with your height you very well may need longer clubs [ that's if they are not longer already ] Your arms should be hanging directly below your shoulders, [ try not to reach for the ball ] perpendicular to the ground. Your shaft should about 45 degrees to your arms give or take a bit. You should have about 30 degree bend at the waste approx...

The above is in a correct setup, in this setup you can determine if you club is at the right length for you or not. plus you need to look at whether your clubs have the correct lie angle.

If you believe your descent angle is to steep lower your hands at set up. and see if you get a change in steepness. Fades equal a club path that's slightly across the line from fight to left. Draws equal a club path that's slightly across the line from inside to out. By moving back you are swinging a bit more around your body and less up and down, which gives you a bid more down the line swing favoring the in to out swing path. If you keep hitting what you want you may have found the correct setup.

Could be a frequency thing due to peaks and valleys. You hit driver what 10-14 times a round? Irons much more that so your iron trends easy to see. I use Game Golf and my averages move around quite a bit. Never shocked what a couple good or bad rounds do to the numbers.

You are a statistical "mean" and fit right into the middle of the data with a 5 handicap and 100mph SS. :-)

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
