10 Aug 24 - been a while since I’ve posted here, today’s round was a solid and consistent round (41 front and back).  Only one dbl - hole 11 : tee shot tagged the overhanging branches on the right side which meant I hit a punchy 6i for a low running layup to the pond that guards the green that led to an easy 9i (should have went PW) that landed deep on the green to just barely roll off which led to a pitch with the 54 that stopped short for a longish (15’) putt that was a 2 putt for a 6.  Overall it was a solid round as the course was CPO (cart path only) due to the heavy rains from Debby this week.  Stats wise of the 9 pars, 6 were up&downs (greenside drills pay off),  27 putts total (deeply attributable to the chips and pitches putting the ball close).  Fairway misses were for the most part less than two yards deep, no biggie.  It was a good day on a wet course….

44-53=97 at Musgrove Mill Oak tees. First round here since developing tennis elbow on 6/1/24. Very discouraging. Not one aspect of my play was any good today. Pulling the ball off the tee; several 3-putts today after gaining 3.25 and 5.1 strokes putting my last two rounds. Not much fun playing this poorly.

Best round of the year, 38-42-80. Disappointing because I haven't broken 80 in 5 years and was in position to go low on the back. Putting did me in. But I am very pleased about the way I am striking the ball right now. Support your local club pro.

Played Musgrove Mill today, 44-49=93. Hit 11/14 fairways and the 3 I missed were because I hit them through the end of the fairways on 1, 9 and 16 by a combined 3’. Hit 7 GIR but missed birdie putts inside 9’ on 6 and 7. Parred 4 and 18, which are difficult par 4s. Hit over the green on 8, 9 and 10, going +8 on those three holes. All three after great drives. Need more reps! Handicap increased by 1.1 shots after the past 2 rounds. Will go up more if I don’t play better since my 20th score was a 73…

30 Aug 24 - Played the weekly Men's Golf round, today was a return solid play with an 81 (40 / 41).  The second time I've had only one "6"  - next goal is to have a "no sixes round".  Missed several birdies that could have made this an all time low.  Still a solid day of golf, with good approach shots and some great up and downs.   10 of 14 fairways hit, 32 putts, 9 pars, 9 bogies, 0 dbls or worse (a new personal best).

Shot a stress free “no sixes” 78 (38/40) with Covid on Sunday.  Practically asymptomatic (congestion and fatigue), I wouldn't have even tested myself if a coworker I was in close contact with hadn’t informed me he tested positive. Told my group I was planning to skip but they insisted I still play if I was up for it. Glad I did because I hit 13 GIR which might be a personal best, but didn’t putt very well.

43 (7 over)
Driver was iffy all 9, so had to scramble.
Triple bogie on a par 4 killed me!

Leslie Park: 82 (70.1/128). I think I played better than I scored. I have not played much lately and -0- practice has taken its toll.

Shot a 42 tonight. I went out decided to  just swing with good flow and let the swing be what it is. It was overall decent. Especially when I kept it shorter.

Shot my best score today but didn't feel like the best I've played overall. First time breaking 90 though! Shot an 86.
Almost eagled a par 4. Drove the ball to about 10 yards to the green, about 20 yards to the pin. Chipped the ball to land less than an inch from the cup on the second bounce. Was able to birdie it, great feeling!

Novice golfer seeking to learn and improve.

    • Smart2Move https://www.smart2move.com/devices/3d-dual-force-plates I now have a set of the Smart2Move 3D Dual Force Plates. These measure forces and torques in all three dimensions, and are portable (somewhat — each plate weighs about 12 pounds) and run wirelessly to an iPad. I've already used them for a session or two, and often I would just AirPlay my screen to the TV in my hitting station. It worked really well in early testing, and I'm excited to continue to work with Smart2Move and these plates. @david_wedzik were among the first people in the world to own a SwingCatalyst. We have a BodiTrak as well. I'm on record as saying a few things regarding these things: You can "see" what golfers are doing with your eyes, even if it's not really measured. They were kind of a pain to set up and use. Students are bad at understanding forces and torques. Everyone has semi-decent nGRF; what you can gain from using them is somewhat limited, and instructors make too much out of GRF these days. ROI? In order… 1. You can see what golfers are doing with your eyes, even if it's not truly measured. They say "force precedes motion" and that's true. And I can see what golfers are doing - where they're applying forces, torques, etc. I don't know exactly how much, but my estimates would be pretty close. I don't necessarily need force plates to help golfers, or to see what they're doing, but… they do. Like I've found with GEARS, and my GCQuadMAX… golfers are more willing to make changes when they do something and I say "no, you didn't do it" when as I say that, I'm pointing to proof that they didn't do it. It carries more weight than just me saying "you didn't do it" based on what I saw. 😄  2. They were kind of a pain to set up and use. They were; that's still true. These S2M plates are not. They connect to an iPad, not an entire PC with a dedicated, wired camera that has a hard time getting a good frame rate. The iPad gives 240 FPS video. 3. Students are bad at understanding forces and torques. They still are. You tell someone to add pressure to their left foot, and they'll push with their right foot to shift their weight left… thus adding force to their right foot. But, that's where I come in — I can explain what we're trying to do, and narrow their focus to one graph or one number. 4. Everyone has semi-decent GRF; what you can gain from using them is somewhat limited, and instructors make too much out of GRF these days. To be honest, I still think this is mostly true, but… I'm seeing enough people these days who shift their weight into their trail side toes instead of back toward the heel a bit, or who are super late getting forward, or who don't do some other things pretty easily seen on a graph, that I think I can narrow their focus to just the one thing, explain that thing, and make good progress. Plus, for better players, sometimes this timing — or the amount that they do it — can lead to a noticeable change, even if it takes them from a +1 to a +1.4, or a 110 MPH driver swing to 114. 5. No, at $14k, there would be no good ROI argument to be made. 😛 Erie is a "thrifty" town, after all. I'm excited to have these again. Like I said, the old systems were a pain to use, and these are much easier, and need only an iPad. I'll be using them in "regular" lessons as well as in GEARS lessons. Any questions?
    • Day 269: 9/17/24 Indoor chipping followed by slow motion swings working on weight shift. Each day begins with a Par4Success workout.
    • Oh my, no. It's a wedge second shot. Your angle into the green doesn't matter. You should not be aiming for the "side" of a 30-yard wide fairway to give yourself a better angle to hit your wedge shot. Or almost any shot after that. If the mounds on the left were a pond, or horrible bunkers, sure aim left. But they're not. If teeing off from the right side gives you confidence, cool, but the angle changes like 0.5°.
    • Do you practice through the winter? You're really not even likely that far from Erie… I have a number of students who make the trip every 3-6 months.
    • I have decided to try to play through it. I will put some older clubs into the bag and try to swing away! Winter will be here soon enough!
