Yesterday was a battle. And that was just getting to the course. Saturday night was our bowling banquet and I partied like a rock star. We were drinking beer all night and then we thought a few rounds of Jager Meister would be a good idea. After bowling we went to the bar and I had three pints of Blue Moon. We went to another bar after that and I had a big pilsner of Hacker Pschor. I love wheat beer, but it's not good in large quantities. I should have gone with the Blue Light. Anyway, I had a 7:52 tee time and I only got about 5 1/2 hours of sleep. I almost had to stop the car to throw up twice. I made it to the course and almost threw up again. I bought a Powerade and a turkey sandwich before teeing off and it helped. I was 6 over through 4 with 3 doubles and a par. The last 5 I played 3 over and never got sick so it ended up as a decent 44 all things considered. It was also my first round with the new Scotty putter. I had never even hit a ball with it prior to yesterday.

Shot an 80 today, but it was one of those 80s where you hit everything solidly, but can't make a putt and miss every green by just a little bit, yet find yourself in a crappy lie. 39 on the front wasn't too bad, but a double-bogey on the back was bad. Three shots from two different bunkers. At least on the third one I had a 2-inch putt to finish it out. But those first two lies, wow, they were brutal.

worst weekend in a while.. 81, 82, 81. I wish I could blame it on my brand new LT2's in the bag, but nope. Just a stinky swing and a huge bulge in the face of my putter (at least you'd think I had a bulge if you seen me putt).

83! 83! Ugh.

My round included:
Front: 39, 4/7 FW, 5/9 GIR, 18 Putts, 0/4 UD
Back: 44, 4/7 FW, 5/9 GIR, 20 Putts, 0/4 UD

In other words, I couldn't make anything. The horrid putting stats explain the 0/8 Up and Down. 8/14 fairways and 10/18 greens isn't too awful, but I couldn't make anything. I made the first putt of the day (birdie), and nothing after that.

I played the back against someone in our Tuesday night league. I won three of the four available points. Took the 10th hole with a double bogey. Was playing pretty laid back on a few holes where I had easy wins, but still... Ugh.

Shot a scrambling 82 today at Shenandoah Country Club, an upscale daily fee course in West Bloomfield, MI. Didn't have my good fastball off the tee, hit quite a few drives that ended up in the rough by less than a yard. Only hit two fairways clean all day, but was in the first cut at least five times. Managed to hit 10 GIR despite my tee troubles. Started with five consecutive pars, but couldn't get the birdie putts to drop.

In all, not a bad score for how unevenly I hit the ball off the tee. And a great day to play (65 and sunny).

Holy Moly,

Par, Birdie, Birdie, Birdie, Bogey, Bogey, Bogey, Birdie, Birdie for -2. The worst part is my bogeys were all non up and downs which I usually excel at.

OK, before I mention the actual score I shot Monday, let me preface by saying that I had not played at all for almost 15 years until a couple of months ago and this was about my 6th round. I shot 99, but if you had been playing with me you might not believe it was over 90. I was actually hitting the ball very well, starting off with a textbook par 4 on the first hole. But like the 80 Iacas described above, I must have had 4 or 5 holes where I was hole high just off the green to the right plus another 3-4 where I was just off the front or the back. A stiff wind was making club selection tough, particularly on the short irons. I didn't save par on any of those and some turned into doubles. Add a couple of total fiascos and the picture gets pretty grim. It's tough to be "satisfied" with a 99 when I used to be a consistent 85-86, but I was happy with the way I was hitting the ball. It really gets down to the short game - short pitches and putts. Well, that and fewer vacations at the beach and in the wilderness. At least every round and trip to the range is getting better. Wish I had a good place to practice my short game. The local range is pretty much for driving. A course about an hour away has a great setup, but it's hard for me to get out that far. If I'm going to spend that much time I might as well play a round!
FWIW,

Best number I've ever had there, but it'd been at least 2-3 years since I'd played it. Course was in great shape, especially the greens. A couple holes have been redesigned, and there's a huge new clubhouse with nice pro shop and lockerrooms. All that, and it's cheaper now than it was last time I played. I like that trend.

Where else do you play around there? I just heard that Links of Novi, Links of Pinewood and El Dorado are all closing after this season.

Oh man. Today is going to be the best weather of the year so far. 80+ degrees. No work, I'm playing 36 today! 18 at a CC that is rated #1 here.

They are closing them to run a road through that will have residental and comercial properties. One of my clients was a part owner in Links at Pinewood. I haven't played Shanendoah recently, but I had heard that the changes were nice.

I usually play White Lake Oaks on Sunday mornings and in a league at Heather Highlands on Wednesdays. Other than that, I try to play wherever I can. I try to play at least 2 or 3 courses each year that I have never played before. I run a personal training club and I'm really lucky that several of my clients are members at country clubs and they take me with them to play. I have been fortunate enough to play Oakland Hills (both South and North), Franklin Hills, TPC Michigan, Detroit Golf Club, Orchard Lake and Forest Lake.

Oh, by the way, last night was a total disaster. My irons were not sharp and I struggled with the putter. It's only my second round with the Scotty and the greens were plugged and inconsistent but it was mostly me. My lags were poor and I missed 5 putts inside 5 feet. I three putted from 3 feet. Worst of all, I was playing against a guy with the same average and he was almost as bad. He beat me by 1 shot and his wife beat my wife by 1 shot net. We took 0 of 6 points possible. You know its bad when the highlight of the round was the fact that I was able to close with 3 straight boggies. Ugh.

Just got back from a local 9 hole course. I was going to do a nicer one but i wanted to break my clubs in. Anyway i played bogey golf which isnt bad. The worst i got was a double.

Anyway i was pretty happy with new clubs that havnt touched a driving range. Got a few pars and a couple awesome putts, and chips.

Great day and we had great weather. Me and my buddy Adam had a fun 18. There was a tournament going on so it was pretty festive.

Anyway not a great score but it was a good time.

Another disaster. I couldn't hit the friggin ocean if I fell out of a boat. It was mostly the putter and medium length wedges again. I am still getting used to the Scotty and it will just take time. I stayed after and set up two tees on the putting green slightly wider than my putter head and practiced rolling in 3 footers. I decided to stay until I made 10 in a row. I lipped out twice on 8 before making the 10. The head is heavier than my old Ping Pal and it doesn't take much to blow one by. I did find that I was not commiting to the short putts and that I was trying to die them into the hole. This putter seems to like to ram them into the cup instead. The Vokey is also new this year and my distance control is terrible right now. I just need to get to the range and pitch balls with it.

Had the big money game with 8 players (all under 5 HCP). Shot 71 (-1) and even had a double bogey. Won every bet. 2nd 71 this year. The game is on its way back...look out.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
