Second time out this season today, and shot a forty two. Was pretty pleased with this even though I know it could have been a lot better. I hit 5 GIR's and had two that were a few feet off. I three putted each of the first three holes going bogey, double bogey, bogey. I par'd 4, double bogey'd 5, and then par'd out. It was a good day all in all.

88 at Four Seasons Aviara in Carlsbad, CA.

Perfect day.

Front nine was a 42 with mixed bogies and a few pars and a nice birdie on the par 3 - sunk a 35 foot double breaking putt to make it. Back nine was mediocre, with 3 pars in a row entering it, but i hit a string of tough holes and a couple of mis-hits to finish at 46 over.

That course is immaculate - the greens were quite fast but so smoooooth.

Played a new course for me. Wasn't bad. Didn't do anything spectacular. Probably could have converted a few bogeys into pars with course knowledge, but that's to be expected. My loan birdie was an adventure. Big tee shot, but pushed a bit right into the trees. Hit a punch 9-iron that hooked about 30 yards and ran up the apron to just short of the green. Pitched in from there. That's why you never give up on a hole!

Finally got to play Bethpage Black. I live 10 minutes away. Shot a 42 on the front nine which I think is pretty decent. I didn't get to finish though because it got dark.

Stopped at a course just west of Omaha called Quarry Oaks. Very nice course along the Platte River. Lots of elevation changes, side-hill lies, and narrow greens. Golf Digest gives it 4.5 stars and I think that's about right. Played one of my most consistent and best all-time rounds today. At the turn, my Dad told me he was having fun watching me. He's never said anything like that before.

Played from the tips (7010 yards)

Torrey Pines North Course (US Open!)

46 on the back nine in 25 mph winds blowing across 8 of the 9 holes. Tricky as hell. One birdie and two pars, then the rest bogey (some doubles) golf.

The front nine is covered with US Open tents and buildings, and there is a temporary road cutting across the 11th and 18th holes, with temporary tees on the fairway. The 18th hole par 5 is reachable in 2 easily, it's only about 440-450 yards. I screwed up my 2nd shot though - the wind got ahold of it and put it on hard pan rough behind the green.

The 17th hole was not in good shape - downhill par 3 - the worst part was the tee box - the ground was concrete so my club bounced and closed the face, hooked it. I even choked he club and swung down hard to try to make a divot, but it didn't happen.

Got my first 9 holes of the year in.

Played absolutly awful! very inconsistant, Driver was Horrible!!! 2/8 Fairways. I couldnt even hit my irons properly, and got only 1 or 2 GIRS. I am so horrible with my irons right now its crazy, and I can barely hit them straight or accurate

The good side:

My Putting was amazing!!!!! Four 1 Putts, Four 2 Putts, and a 0 Putt. My putting definatly saved my round. Z-FACTOR! (but not really, I dont have one) I also chipped in on 8 for a birdie (Par 3) First round and I chip in.

I played 10 and also lipped out on a chip. So all in all, somehow I played horrible, couldnt do anything besides putt. And shot a 4 Over 40 (Par 36). Thought it was 39 but made a mistake on the scorecard. Goes to show you putting definatly saves your game.

Sorry for the long writup, just excited about my first round.

Torrey Pines North Course (US Open!)

Of course, the U.S. Open will be played on the South Course.

Shot a 78 today on a course with the weirdly firmest greens. I hit a lot of greens, made no putts (hit it on line, two-putted easily, but couldn't get the speed down all day). Most of the pins were in the front, and as firm as the greens were you couldn't get close. I had 35-foot putts every time I hit a green. Oh well. My driving was good.

Shot 42 for the front nine at Buffalo Run in Colorado. Would have been better if the greens weren't so bad. Worst greens I have ever seen. They aerated them about a month ago but they lost a bunch of good grass. Most of the time I was putting through sand and grass mounds. You would make a great putt and have a good read but when the ball was suppossed to break, it would hop up and to the opposite side. Very frustrating.

89 at my club. Instead of a 7am start, I should have waited. The wet, tall rough probably cost me 6 strokes. They were cutting it as I was on 17....just in time. The few times I was in the rough, I couldn't measurably advance the ball with anything higher than about a 8 iron which is a problem when you're 250 yards out uphill and have to clear a creek that's 100 yards in front of you. But very encouraged with my driver as I hit 9 of 14 fairways and those I missed, I only missed by a few yards, but a few yards today was dead.

I hacked and scaffled my way to a lousy 50 on the back nine today. Not a single penalty stroke, and not even bad contact with any of my shots--they were just all hacked off line. 3/7 fairways, 1/9 greens (does that help?). 23 putts didn't exactly help, either.

Managed to get 18 in last night after work. Shot an UGLY 92.
Still not getting off the tee (putting myself in bad situations) and made some bonehead moves....finished par/bird but that doesn't make up for the triples on the par 5's.

Today 74, good putting round. Day b4 82 - played chip it back into play all day. Got to get rid of the inconsistents ... ( said that every year for 20 yrs !!)

Two rounds to report. Shot 85 at Highland Creek the other day. Ever feel like you hit the ball well but couldn't score. That's this round. Found EIGHT bunkers. Got out well but paid a price. oh well.

Played the home course today and shot a disappointing 80. Bogeyed the last five holes. Missed greens and then tried to go for the last hole (par 5) in two and pulled it left into creek. That's just stupidity.

Well, tee it up another day.

I played Shorecliffs yesterday with a friend of mine (his handicap is around 11). We did a handicapped skins game, and I came up 4 ahead. I also had my first time being on in two on a par-5 (hole 16, for those that know the course: my tee shot cleared the water, paving the way for a 4-iron to the green). I left my eagle putt less than a foot short and tapped in for a birdie. This makes me 1-for-2 in going for it in two, and 2-for-2 in making a birdie following an attempt to go for it in two (my previous attempt, in November, I topped a hybrid for my second shot but still put an approach within 3 feet and made that putt).

Total comes out to 90, my lowest score to date on a regulation course. And Shorecliffs, at 69.2/127 (white tees), is the toughest course on which I've played at least twice. So the 90 was all the more satisfying. Back-9 43, my best 9 holes (not counting a 42 at a par-33).

    • Here's my current 6 iron swing. There are a few things I see that make me cringe. I will say the swing is pretty playable right now. I'm mostly hitting it well lately. (in terms of results).    Here's caddie view. Again, I have stuff to work on, but this swing is pretty effective in letting me get around the golf course.
    • Just an FYI, this has been tried by nearly every major sport at one time or another. Its surprisingly difficult and expensive for the sport to deal with.  I'm not sure that is necessarily a problem. Within a short driver of where I live there are tons of lesser events, semi-pro, corn-ferry, even college or high-school events I can and have taken my son and daughter to, in order to help them catch a bug for the game. We've all had a great time attending them. Plus we could leave early and not feel bad when the 10-year-old attention span starts to wain. ... although unfortunately no bugs for the game have been caught so far. 😢   As a consumer you could always refuse to buy from stubhub, etc.... If everyone did that it would put the secondary sellers out of business.  I say that as a complete hypocrite, as I have used stubhub more than once to get tickets to events. I paid over face value for the tickets but not that much over face value. Plus, Stubhub actually had fewer added fees than did the original seller, which narrowed the gap between what I paid and what I would have paid from original seller. (I assume the original seller waives such fees for the likes of Stubhub)

    • That's not relevant. If they wanted to sell 50k tickets, they still managed to do that. The tickets will get used, so that's as "widespread" as they wanted. Dropping the price to still sell the same number of tickets would be dumb. Again, it's not like the tickets won't get used, and the way to reduce the # of tickets on stubhub, etc. is to price them where secondary ticket resellers don't see a lot of value. If the tickets were $1M, no secondary ticket resellers would buy it. If they were $1, they'd buy as many as they could. That's an order of magnitude more complicated. And, again, if you price them appropriately, you can sell out while minimizing the value seen by secondary ticket resellers, while keeping it simple. Stuff like that sounds good until you scratch a few atoms off the top. Scratch a few atoms off the top man.
