My experience is men's clubs are usually more social than competitive and quite a few join for no other reason than it gives them another excuse to golf. In our club most guys play with their same group week in and out. Which I find silly but it is what it is.

OP says the invitation is there free of charge. The club is either impressed with your play or your attitude around the course or 19th hole. Or, they realize the club dies without new blood.

Above all else, have fun. I've been in three clubs and they all have/had the same "fun first" attitude. There will be a super-rules guy, a loose-rules guy, a club thrower, and a guy who leaves right away after losing. Everyone else will be cool.

Just make sure the handicaps are kept well - then any club guy could play any other club guy.

Gambling is illegal at Bushwood sir, and I never slice.

It varies place to place. Also, it depends on what types of contests are involved.

In the Senior Men's League where I play, you have two types of contests going at the same time:
* Team-based with modified Stableford scoring
* An individual skins game on each hole

Most places are pretty friendly, unless you get in with scratch golfers. A friend of mine played the mini-tour years ago, but never won enough money to lose his amateur status. He plays about 2 HDCP right now, and gets into some no-HDCP skins games where hundreds of $$ can change hands in a day.

You will know the culture after  a couple of rounds.

Focus, connect and follow through!

Mens Leagues certainly vary. I am pleased with my clubs Seniors league and the friendliness of it all. There are seniors who are still extremely competitive but by and large, by the time most are past 60, you are resigned to distance loss and finding the way to score better and not worrying so much as your handicap rises.  We play other clubs in our area and see the two county club courses are more tense than ours and the other semi private /public course. I always try to play my best. But I golf to have fun and relax. Walking off the course because of poor play probably reflects that person's life attitude as well. I avoid those types, As it is written, "they are a vexation"
