I was wanting some wedges for Christmas this year is I only have a pitching wedge. I think I should get a 56 in a 52 but my grandpa thinks I should get a 50 and 56.   What combo should I get?

Depends on a ton of things. First off, what is the loft of your PW? Most people recommend 4-6 degrees of separation between wedges. So if you're PW is 48 degrees, then 50 is probably too close. It it's 46 degrees, then a 50 and 56 might work. Also, don't be afraid to visit a store like Golfsmith and hit some wedges on the launch monitor to see what lofts you hit well.

It sounds like you're a beginner and most people recommend not starting with too many wedges, but when you're ready, If you have room for another wedge in your bag, you also might want a LW. In that case you could go 52-56-60 or 50-54-58 or copy me and go 50-54-60.

There is not a one size fits all answer to what wedges to carry. Long story short, figure out the loft of your PW, take it from there and mind the gaps.

My PW is 45, and then I go 50, 55, 60.

What's the loft of your pitching wedge?

I go 45°, 50°, 55° and 60°.

If your GW and SW are separate models from your PW (probably from iron set), make sure you don't end up with an odd gap between your PW and GW.

When I got my X20 Tours, the PW was 46* so I thought at first I would go with 52 - 56. But, the PW had a hotter face than the CG14 wedges, and the 46 to 52 has about a 16 yard distance gap. So, I ended up with 50 / 54 /58.

As per PJC, check out the wedges on a launch monitor to get your distance gaps.

I'd ask your Grand Pa why his advice differs from what you think you need. Then go from there. Or, you can get all three. That way both you and your Grand Pa are happy golfers.

    • Rich Hunt has as usual (since 2013) predicted the 20 players most likely to win based mostly on data. Here's the state of things after two rounds. "Top 10" means it's his personal predition of the 10 mostlikely to win of those 20. Rose was filtered out based on lack of distance off the tee, but with his 300 average he's just over the tour average and longer than several other players that made the top 20 shortlist (Lowry, Hovland, Cantlay +), so I don't understand how that works. Maybe certain metrics overrule other metrics? • Announcing;  it bugs me when they ask “Are you proud of yourself?”  “Are you proud of the way you played?”  “Are you proud of this or that?”  In what other sport do the announcers-interviewers ask this annoying question? And then the golfers have to answer… “I was really proud of myself when.. yada yada" Tyrell Hatton, 16th hole;  Following his reaction to his tee shot, after his first putt I thought his head was going to explode.  He’s kinda entertaining that way, I think he’s the top contender for ‘most likely to explode'
    • Update on my prediction!  Standing by it, regardless of my mangling of the divorce item in point #3. As to where we stand, Rory’s turnaround, wow.  His talent is undeniable, and as he puts it himself - he’s resilient.
    • Not sure what you’re referring to? Raising my hand on the Rory divorce point - I got that wrong, looks like they’ve reconciled, good for him.  And I’ll concede this undermines the third point in my analysis as to why he won’t win a Masters.   However, what other simple facts did I get wrong?
