I finally got around to reading my last copy of todays golfer and there was a great article on blind golf. I found it very humbling that those with visual impairment can still enjoy this great game.

They play to the same R&A rules with the only change being the caddie can align the club and shot. The rest is down to the player.

One of the gentlemen featured is almost fully blind but is a scratch player and is teaching other blind players the game. I know we all say "feel aint real" but for these guys i think it may be real. The fact that they are able to tell how there shot has come off just by the feel of the club amazes me.

I have so much respect for these players (and indeed and with disbility) that i would be happy to volunteer as a caddie. Reading this has certainly put my own game into perspective. next time i slice a drive i wont be so quick to throw a paddy! :-)

Russ,

Can you site the article for us or provide a link? I don't see it on their site.

Prepare to be awestruck as we explore the world of blind golf

Quote

When he did set foot back on the course, Cookson discovered that he hadn’t lost any of his golfing prowess. “My local pub were invited on a golf day but didn’t have enough players, so they asked me to help out. My dad still had an old set of clubs in the house so I gave it a go. I shot 75 around Tidworth Garrison and it made me realise I could still do it. It’s been full-on since then. I’ve played in a lot of the international tournaments. I’ve won the Canadian Open, the World Championships twice, and the British Masters.”

Cookson had the advantage of being an accomplished golfer before losing his sight, but Baxter insists that it is possible to learn the game without being able to see your swing. “We provide training sessions for newer golfers,” says Baxter, born with a serious eye condition which worsened to leave him with below 10 per cent visibility.

“As you can imagine, learning to play golf as a blind person is incredibly difficult. It’s alright for people like myself who played when I had reasonable vision – you get your swing before you lose your sight – but try to explain the golf swing to a totally blind person and they think you’re talking Double Dutch.”

Thanks to @RussUK for bringing it up. The story about the guy shooting 75... blind... after not touching a club for 10 years is amazing.

75 while blind? Not sure what impresses me more, that or blind tennis.

Great article.   I have lousey eye's and wear thick glasses ... in the back of my mind, I always wonder how much better I could be with good eye's.    Article puts it into perspective - I should quit even wondering about that ...

Thanks for bringing this up, these players are simply incredible.  I'll post another link, this one to the North American One Armed Golfers Association.  I only know of this because the son of our club's original head pro one won the world one-arm championship in the early 90's.
