Callaway's soft focus adds layers with new Chrome Soft, Superhot 55 balls

Popular Chrome Soft to now feature dual core

By Mike Stachura

Callaway’s improved position in the golf ball market is rooted in the idea of “soft.” That’s thanks in large part to the success last year of the Chrome Soft, which incorporated the tour greenside spin of a soft urethane cover, with a resilient lower compression core that reduced spin off the driver and longer irons.

Its 2016 followup to Chrome Soft finds a way to go both softer and selectively firmer in an effort to improve distance and spin. The key is a dual-core construction that features an inner core with a compression softer than the original Chrome Soft and a firmer outer core to provide additional ball speed, particularly for faster swingers. Combined the two cores make for an overall core compression that’s very similar to Chrome Soft. In fact, because of the firmer outer core, the new inner core is even softer than Callaway’s Supersoft two-piece ball, featuring a compression that measures out at -40.

“The outer core is firmer so it adds a little more resilience to the core overall,” says Dave Bartels, Callaway’s senior director of golf ball research. “That’s going to give us better spin separation. It’s really about how you selectively position the layers to give you low spin off the driver but more spin with the irons and wedges.”

Like the previous Chrome Soft, the new ball features Callaway’s softest urethane cover for greenside spin.

Superhot 55

Callaway also made soft a priority on its new Superhot 55, a three-piece, soft Surlyn-cover ball. With its 55 compression (similar to Callaway’s Supersoft ball), Bartels says Superhot 55 is “for people who want a little more shotmaking performance than Supersoft, a little more spin around the greens, primarily due to the compression and having that extra mantle layer in there.”

I started playing the Chrome Soft at the end of last year and (possibly coincidentally) started putting the ball so much better.  I do like a softer ball so I'll definitely be checking out the 2016 version.  I remember reading an interview with Callaway last year saying that they had the technology to go much softer than the 2015 Chrome Soft and in general golfers liked a softer ball so maybe the 2016 version is heading more down that road.

A recent positive comment on the Chrome Soft from a golf buddy.  Got me thinking a bit.  I found one last autumn and played it a for a round or two before returning it to the forest.  My impression was positive.

I've been impressed with the soft feel and distant of the Chrome S ball used in the winter colder temps. The lower compression also helps on wet soggy turf which greatly reduces compression. Most other balls feel rock hard in the winter when temps are below 40*  I've made it a point to use the lower compression golf balls on cold days when I golf.

    • Day 5 - 2024-10-05 Hit some somewhat soft pitching wedges. The outside and inside, particularly the outside of the left thumb where my right hand goes on it, is still pretty sore. I don't think I'll do more damage, but I'm reluctant to do too much because I don't want to compensate or alter my motion.
    • Day 156 (05 Sep 24) - Played new to me course today, it’s near our beach place and have been wanting to play it for a couple of years now.  It’s a neat Par 70 that plays just over 6k from the tips, played the whites 5,500 +/-.  Tight fairways and severely undulating greens made for some great shot strategy.  Wound up with an even 80 that included two lost ball penalties.  Putter was solid - 28 total.  Wedge play kept the pars happening - 6 of the 9 pars were up and downs.  Not bad for the first time on a new course.
