1-Plane vs 2-Plane

Yesterday I accidentally discovered that the reason I hit my woods so much better than my irons is because I am using a 2-plane swing for my woods and I am trying (unsuccessfully) to use a 1-plane swing for my irons.   At least, I believe this is the case.

It seems to me that for an older golfer like me, with less flexibility than younger guys, attempting a 1-plane swing will cause me to come over the top, and that, during my transition, dropping my arms a little, opening the club face just a little, and getting into a 2-plane swing allows me to get into a much better hitting position.

Also, it seems like putting this loop at the top of the swing allows for a much smoother transition.  It seems like with a 1-plane swing, at some point your swing comes to a complete halt before it starts in the other direction.

This is going to take some practice to get it down, but I think I am on the right track.  Or am I?

What do you think about this?

I think you should take some quality video of your woods and irons swings from FO and DTL and start a My Swing thread.

Very difficult (if not altogether pointless) to discuss "swing feels" that may or may not be representative of what you are actually doing.

I think that the differences between a 1 plane and 2 plane swing are often vastly overstated and, in many cases, people who are trying to be 1 plane really over do it because they actually try to literally keep everything on the same plane (whatever that means) and end up with something that's pretty non-functional. Nobody really swings on one plane unless it's a 1/4 swing chip shot or something. The body just doesn't work that way. Not saying that you fall into that group, but without good video, nobody - including yourself, really knows how you're actually swinging the club.

Yours in earnest, Jason.

You're right.   I guess it's pretty pointless to try to describe what I'm doing when I can just post a video.   I'll give it a shot.

I agree, discussing swing feels is pointless. For feel, I know what it feels like when I do something wrong. I know what it feels like when I get everything aligned. I can also tell from the ball flight what happened. But describing those to someone without showing them is pointless.

There's a thread on how to set up your camera or phone to take a video - what angles etc. If you have a Samsung Galaxy or iPhone you can shoot at 120 fps in slow motion. It'll use a bit more battery, but it's worth it.

Yes, this.

Also, @Marty2019, I also think you're probably not making two very different swings.

    • Best drive I've ever hit: I will not be answering any questions about the rest of the hole. Or the round, for that matter.
    • I tried hybrids way back when TaylorMade introduced the copper orange Firesole Rescue, the clubhead having been made of titanium which was still relatively new even in drivers back then. I couldn't hit it well at all, and while the success of hybrids suggests that the modern ones must be quite good,  I'm perfectly happy with the 5, 7, and 9-woods.  Early ones of mine were Top Flite Intimidator 400s made by Spalding... and also made of titanium, now that I think of it.  I still have them in my basement. I do bag a driving iron, but it's a one-trick-pony that never sees fairway use.
    • The last time I played Maxfli balls, Dunlop was still making them. How long ago was that? Mostly, though, I used to play Top Flites (original 336 dimple model) when Spalding was still making them. Now I play the Pro V1x. Last time that I ordered some, Titleist was still making them. Let's see how long that lasts.
    • Once, on a course in Middleton, Massachusetts that I used to love but has since closed down,  I hit the wrong half of a huge, UK style double green.  Then I made the hundred foot putt.  Tough to  forget that one.
