A bit of a rant here, but I'm pretty tired of hearing him say this. It's almost like the old SNL skit when the psychologist would say to every clients questions "have you looked at yourself?". Fix your big miss? How about FIND your big miss. Hanks advice which has now become almost a jingle is incomplete at best. It applies to very low handicappers who may shoot 76-77 because they were hitting it right a bit and want to work on that to get scratch. But the average Joe out there, skulls, fats, slices, hooks and shanks may riddle their round equally. It's more important to FIND the error/errors in your swing that are CAUSING these errors. As Erik has said, find the root cause of your errant shots. Sorry Hank, I just don't find your catch phrase to be helpful at all. My two cents.

He's just attempting to capitalize on the branding of his book. Hank knows a lot about the swing and can write a laundry list of what is wrong with a swing. As to instruction and feels, you've seen what he does on tv.

Yeah you're right. I like listening to callers who call in for help, just get irked when he just says  "what's your big miss?" And the poor 25hcp is like...." Well...I'm all over the place...slices and hooks, shanks...a lot of each." Hank says "you've gotta find the big miss that's wrecking your chance to improve." Hell....all of those are big misses. I know he knows a lot but damn he's become a talking commercial advert.

Yep, a high capper doesn't know enough to talk about his big miss or what's causing the topped driver shot. I hope Hank tells them to find a decent instructor so they can discover that big miss.

To be fair, it's likely that all those misses are related. If a guy has that many contact issues, clearly his big miss is the golf ball ;-)

It's just a tag line yes, but it's not unlike how we tell everyone to work on their priority piece.

    • Can you elaborate on this?  There's a par-4 hole at the course I've played the most (was my home course for over a decade, now 50 miles away but I still go and play there) whose green is below the fairway and I realized recently it's one of three holes on the course I've never made birdie, despite that I often have a short iron into the green for my second shot.  It isn't even that I haven't made birdie, but I realize I often don't hit the green.  My typical play of the hole is to have a near-GIR and sometimes I get up and down, but not as often as I would if I were trying to 2-putt.
