One summer a long time ago, I was playing a round with a friend on our local course in the woods.  It was a weekday morning and we were grouped with an old guy about 93 years old. He rode in a cart, which was unusual then.  He had a whole bag full of woods, with a putter, and that was really unusual.  He was a grand old gentleman, and reminded us that golf is a game for a life time. He fell asleep on a bench at the third tee.  We just let him sleep, and sent out a marshall to check on him. I will never forget that day, and what a wonderful spokesman he was for the sport.

If I make it to 93 and can still play a bit of golf, a nap on the 3rd tee sounds about right.

I just recalled a mildly amusing incident from 2015.  I was a single and near the end of my 18, I was waiting on a group in front.  It was sunny and I just sort of laid down on the bench adjacent to the tee and enjoyed the sun.

A ranger drove up in a cart and asked if I was all right.  I sort of propped myself up and said, "yes, I'm fine, just enjoying the sun".  The ranger looked relieved and said he was happy he did not have to perform "mouth to mouth". We both got a chuckle out of that.

I forgot about riding in a cart, which is unusual, and all the woods.  I didn't realize that's what made a wonderful spokesman.  How do you speak when you're asleep? :-D

Found that out in 2 holes?  He was sleeping on the third. :-)

I played a couple of months ago with a guy that was 95 (soon to be 96).  I hope to be vertical when I 96, so golfing would definitely be a bonus.  I did marvel at that.  As a spokesman?  He couldn't remember our names.

What is the point of your involvement in this thread other than to piss on the guys story?  Make fun of old guys?

I played 9 holes with an 80+ year old guy last year who still walked the course. There was a certain calmness about him that made it really easy to enjoy the round - even if we played at a snail's pace. Hell, it made me feel better about the game of golf in general, knowing it might be possible to enjoy playing another 30 years.

Ironically, we let an older couple in a cart play through that day. They were regular members and the husband - who I'd played golf with on one occasion - was on the complete opposite end of the spectrum. This guy was a complete POS - just a nasty, cynical, miserable old fart who didn't mind sharing his "charm" with others.

Fortunately, in my limited experience most older golfers seem to appreciate the fact they're still able to get out there. I try to remember that when I've shot an exceptionally bad round.

League night late last summer, 3rd fairway.  We all get to our shots in the fairway when a 8 point buck chases 2 does right up the fairway, through our group, up and across the green then into the woods.  The does made a direction cut to the right just as the buck was crossing the green.  Massive hoof prints gouged into the green.

"Did that just happen?"

While I'm sure this isn't the most unusual thing in the world (having someone grab your ball), I was out one day, drove the ball down the middle of the fairway and while walking to the ball a guy from the hole to my left is walking to my ball.  He picks it up and starts to walk away, I yell to him and catch up to him to tell him that it's my ball which I marked with my initials.  He's goes on to tell that it's his and to leave him alone, so I show him another ball that I had that was marked the same as the other.  He throws a couple profanities at me and walks away, so I just figured it wasn't worth the argument.  Next hole the ranger confronts me about it and after getting my side of the story tells me that I was in the wrong.  Couldn't believe it.

I have played a couple of rounds and had deer walk the course.  They just crossed the fairway and ran into the woods.  Seeing deer is not that uncommon and I see them crossing the street around my home.
