Well, I agree with that, you put it in the water with your second, you probably make 6, maybe 7. If I go for a par-5 in two, I'm not flag hunting, even if I hit a 310-yard drive, which would be an outlier in my case... and had 6-iron in for example, I'm not flag hunting. If I hit it 25 feet away in the middle of the green, If I push or pull it, and knock it in the hole for a deuce, that's fine, too.

The length of hole we are talking about here would be a par 4 on tour.  You can't survive out there laying up on par 4's.

The 15th at Augusta is a par 5 which the pros have to decide whether to take on the trouble both in front and back.  The long hitters don't think twice about going for it in two.  The shorter hitters quite often will lay up.  I'm sure most of us would be laying up there too.

Judging from the course ratings I would be playing the white tee (not a better player), so this may be off topic.

This said, my typical drive would still leave over 210 to the center. I am not that confident that I can clear the water and stop on the green with my club choice and skill.

I would lay up to short of the water and pitch on hoping for a bird...

But would be pleased with an easy par! ;-)

@vangator This hole would be in the let's make this a par-4 discussion on Tour, however the 1st at Riviera is only 503 yards, the 9th at Waialae is 506 yards and they are both par-5s...

But it's a different topic for a different thread.

15 at Augusta is similar, but Firethorn is 30 yards longer, and the second shot plays downhill, and you lay up to a downslope, unless you lay up toward the Sarazen Bridge which is the flattest part of the fairway.

The 3rd at Seneca Hickory Stick is flatter as @9wood stated earlier, you have already hit your drive, and have 218 yards to the middle, @iacas showed us with a measuring tool that it's 201 yards to clear the water... the area behind the green is a chipping area.

A lot of us had said we'd go for it, I, @onthehunt526, have asked about topography and features of the hole...

@9wood Is this 266-yard drive from the Blue Tees or the Black Tees? I know the hole is probably measured around the slight dogleg.

Well, I finally got to play this par five 3rd hole at Seneca Hickory Stick course yesterday for the first time. People previously shared their thoughts on how they would play this hole. Being my first time and not being familiar with this hole I chose to tee off from the green tees which is 430 yds. This hole has several rolling hills and twists in the fairway and because of the rolling hills you can't see where your tee shot lands. You have to drive up over the hill to see where your ball lies. Nevertheless below is how it went for me. My drive was for 250 yds (which is really good for me) which left me with 180 yds left to the green. But rather than risk the 2nd shot I played a safe lay -up which left with 63 yds to go. On my third shot I used my PW and because I was afraid of the hazard and the water I put too much on the ball and overshot the green by about 5 yds. So I actually ended up with a 6 after I 2 putted. If I ever play this hole again and get off the same drive I just might take my 3 Hybrid and go for the green on my 2nd shot which would put me in position for an eagle try. I know I can do it as long as I get a good ball strike

I think the 180 yards is to the center of the green? If so, a high 5i to the center of the green with a 250 yard drive.

I believe that is correct. It's probably 170 to carry the water. There was a 8 ft mound built up at the back of the green. I could have used my 3 hybrid and used the mound as my back- stop. It would have been in line with my 2nd shot

That's why I probably wouldn't lay up on that hole inside of 230 yards or so.  I don't like any of the layup options.  Not the distances nor the locations/angles.  And I'm not a good wedge player.  If I'm 215 yards out, I want to lay up to a full shot distance (my favorite distance is 130 yards).  I'm definitely not hitting an 85 yard layup.  And I'm just as likely to skull a wedge into the water as I am to hit a controlled, 65 yard shot.  So...no thanks on the layup.

So glad you are posting again! Welcome back! :-)

Yes, I agree that on something this short it's better not to lay up. I am changing my club to 4i because it looks like the landing area behind the green looks relatively friendly. Worst case is a small chip from rough for the regulation shot.

From 180y in I would go for it all day long with my hybrid 5 or my 9 wood. From 216y in I would hesitate and then layup 8 out of 10 times.

Normally I wouldn't have any problem with the pitch onto the green at that distance. I should have played as though there was no water or hazard to cross. The green provided a big enough target so it should have been automatic.

200 yard carry? I go for it. Depending on the day and how I'm hitting the ball that's anywhere from a 5 iron to 3 hybrid. If I were to lay up I'm just as likely to end up in the water if I hit a push/fade/slice or losing the ball if I pull/hook/draw anyway, so no reason not to take the opportunity to try to go for the green.

whats the slope like? uphill? downhill? All depends on the day for me.

If you mean on the 2nd shot, it's just slightly uphill as long as your tee shot carries over the first hill.
