switching irons

I'm looking at swapping irons. I currently have cobra Fp irons, was looking at mizuno mp 60s. Would like to shape my shots a little more. I'm a 90 golfer. Minus a few blow up holes, mostly due to my driver inconcistence, I'd shoot mid 80s. I've read great things about the mp60s. Just wanted another take on the switch. Any feed back would be helpful.

Go for forgiveness over shaping any day. Even our most recent Masters winner uses the more forgiving Apex Pros over the musclebacks. No disrespect, but you don't need to shape your irons if you're a 90 golfer and you probably don't realise that people shape their shots far less than you think. If you read LSW, you'll know that 95% of the full shots that the pros play are their stock shot. Find yours and play to that shot - you'll play better. If you go round the course thinking on each hole 'this calls for a high fade/low fade/low draw/high draw', you'll find yourself in way more trouble than you need.

Now, if you want clubs that are easier to hit, then there are definitely clubs out there that will do that. If you want somewhere in the middle, I've loved my Apex Pros, but I do think that a combo set with the Apex irons in 3-7 and Pros from 8-PW may have been a better way to go. 

Also, maybe look at your driver before your irons, if that's the case? I'd always argue that time invested in practice/lessons (I cannot recommend evolvr enough) is far better-spent than dropping money on new equipment. One of my mates is still using a G5 driver that he hits as well as any of the new releases because his technique is really good and he's used to the club.

Mp 60's look snazzy to me.

Getting new irons is a calling, and you just gotta go for something you would like to grab from the bag. You develop the trust in clubs as you get accustomed to them, and work on your swing. 

Only thing I would consider is forgiveness in the long iron department. You may want to purchase 4, or 5-PW, and opt for hybrid replacements or cavity backs further down the line.

Long irons are not to be trifled with.

If your talking about shaping shots like draws and fades the club doesn't affect it much if at all. Hitting low shots can be harder with game improvement irons but that's about the only difference.

Thanks for the imput! After some more research, I've decided to shy away from the mp 60's. Going with Titleist AP2 irons. Any thoughts on these? Better for a player my handicap?

IMO all Titleist equipment is good. It's hard to say if a club fits a handicap.  If irons play is one of the  strongest parts of your game I'd say you can play anything. If you tend to have off center hits with your irons, have trouble controlling distance, or have a lower ball flight I'd say go with AP1's. I like everything about AP2's  wedge through 6 iron. As for 5-3 I'm not confident enough in my swing. A buddy of mine got the AP1's last year and they are very nice. Let us know what you end up with.

I love the AP2's despite recently switching irons to a blade. I wouldnt not buy a club because you think they are made for people who shape shots or are a better handicap. I would purchase irons that I hit the best period whether it be hogan apex or prosimmon oversized. You could use the logic that willet used a non blade and won but would have won by more had he decided to use the MB irons couldnt you? I would go and hit as many different clubs as possible then go from there you might be surprised....imho

Agree with this. Forget trying to work the ball until you're single digit...get some forgiving Irons if you want new sticks.

I'm an 8 and just bought TM M2's and they are a GI iron. Love em.

I don't see why the mp-60s would be that bad.  If you started the thread saying I'm looking at mp60s because of the feel and look instead of trying to work the ball then you probably would have gotten more favourable answers. I think I read some where that they are suggested for a handicap up to 12, but really does it matter.  Mp-60s feel great, and look awesome.  The only complaint I have with them is that they are too shiny to me. My miss with them tends to be a lil thin while my miss with game improvement set were a lil fat.  Thin to win. 

I've shot some of my best rounds with blades and some of my worst with super game improvements. But hey that's golf.

It's all good. I have a few options. I'll be at the shop around 1030 in the a.m. I'll post what I buy. I'm sure I'll be fine with whatever irons I get. Irons have never been my problem. Just time for a change!

AP2s are excellent. I've played them for two years but recently have been playing the AP1. I'm getting older and wanted the extra distance. My review is here.

I have a 714  AP2 3 iron and maybe should have a whole set ---- got 4-pw 714 cb and I  love the feel of them

No problem wanting to buy new clubs.  It is tougher for me to just walk in and hit a few and then buy.  I usually need to go back at least a few times to re-affirm that the first time wasn't a fluke.  My only thoughts on this is when you say you are inconsistent with your driver and want to shape shots.  The two may be related and caused by where you end up with your drive.

But by all means, buy what you like, there is a lot of merit in the mental side of things that give you confidence in your clubs.
