Today I had that lucky moment in golf when my shot hit next to the flagstick and the ball spun to the flag and then disappeared.

We couldn't tell if it was in the hole, or behind the flagstick with the hole located on a ridge at the back of the green.

I told my friends, I think it spun back into the hole and once we got closer to the green we cold see it did not roll over the ridge to the back of the green and that's when the excitement started.

I had my friend video me walking to the pin to retrieve my ball just for grins.

Well, it actually was a "bucket of Buds"

I got off cheap yesterday with only a few friends at the course, but this afternoon is our Mens Game and guys will be coming out of the woodwork looking for a few beer.

I did however have an IPA with the wife when I got home last night.

My first and only came a couple years ago at my home course.  I was golfing with my wife that night.  The hole was playing 175 yards and about 170 of it is over water....it was getting pretty late so I couldn't tell if it had gone in or not, we were looking all around the bunkers at the back of the green until she went to the hole and said it was in there.  Found my ball mark about 3 feet from the hole so I imagine it one hopped into the cup but don't know for sure.

My local golf store has an insurance card you can buy for HOIs.  Its something like $50 and it lasts a year I believe, but if you get a HOI and you have witnesses (there has to be more specifics than this I know so people don't take advantage of it)  it pays out like $200-$250 or something like that for a bar tab, etc.  Ill have to look into it more and get the specifics, but sounds like a pretty neat idea.

I LOVE that idea. Even though the odds are heavily in favor of the house, it would be some added excitement to every round you played that year.

The closest I've gotten (I've only been playing seriously for a year, but this was at least 2 years ago when I played maybe 2 rounds in that year) I played with my father-in-law and his dad at a course near Sunset Beach, NC. I hit one into the water on a par 3 and re-teed from there and smacked it to within 2-inches of the hole. So even if it went in... it would have actually been recorded as a 3! LOL. So not really that close :-P

Edit: Funny story from last week actually, I was playing by myself but had a slow group in front of me so the people behind me caught up to me at a par 3 and drove right up next to the tee box (sigh). I hit a 6i over water to a par 3 green and as the ball apex'd I said "oh man, that's going in the hole." The 3 guys jumped out of their carts to look. Turns out I was a whole club short lol. I swear, if I hit the 5i that flush it would have gone in :-P

Congrats on your hole in one.  Got my only one a couple of weeks ago.

I disagree that it was luck.  I purposely hit it thin so it would release and roll into the hole and accounted for any break... LOL!!!

    • Which was his second hole, yeah. I talked with Mav's coach/instructor last night, ha ha.
    • Yikes! Colin Morikawa withdraws on 11th tee after the practice swing made his lower back twinge.

    • My flop shots are 6-7° down (AoA). Does that answer it? 😄  The longer answer is… You have to be able to do both shots.
    • I hope you don't mind me raising this one from the dead. I got shortgamechef's video access thing for a few months in 2024. I watched his yip fix videos (the general gist is similar to the first video above, but with a lot more detail) and it made a lot of sense. I was working on it in my backyard off a mat for a while and my yippy thing was mostly gone. Aside from anything else, the flop shot using that technique is so easy and controllable. But I got onto a golf course for the first time of the year and found myself by the green on a downslope with the ball sitting down a little in the rough and I was, not to put too fine a point on it, f***ed. Shallow is all well and good from a good flat lie and I understand it, but you can't make that your be all and end all. I still don't know if it's a good idea to use steep all the time or just when you need to. I have a hard enough time with one technique, let alone too.  Just got a pitching skillest lesson with Erik and unless I misunderstood things some, he wants me a bit steeper. @iacas - where do you fall on the steep vs shallow argument and how do you vary it according to need?
