is there an easy way to not have so much spin on my driver. i hardly get any roll if it actually rolls at all. i actually just put an aldila nv-x stiff shaft in it out of my cobra x-speed. i haven't hit any balls with it yet but i hope it helps. let me know if you guys know anything.

thanks

I have the same problem sometimes. I was thinking it may be the 10.5* but I'm not too sure. Need to go on the launch monitor and see whats up!

Absolutely! The shaft plays a huge part in spin rate. In fact, I had the exact same 'problem' with my previous driver a 10.5* TM 580XD with stock stiff shaft that apparently had a low kick point for a higher launch. After doing some research I found that the Aldila NV65S shaft would work best for me (higher kick point for lower launch). I was considering a reshaft but a 10.5* Mizuno MX-500 with an Aldila NV65S shaft was on sale so I picked that up instead. I've played it for a few months now and I can honestly say without exaggeration that it has produced more penetrating drives averaging 15 to 20 yards further down the fairway (or rough :)).

What's your loft on your driver right now? Lowering a degree will easily get you more roll.

I'm no swing guru, but.... I've found over the last couple of years, no matter how low loft I chose, the ball, off a great drive, would have no roll, even on slightly softer fairways would be behind the pitch mark. Over a few lessons and a while at the range I've found that I've been using a "neutral" grip and slightly open (shoulders) stance. I've been essentially pushing all my drives. I've strenghened my grips and closed my shoulders. This allows me to rip through the ball with my right side/hand and really turn the clubhead over. It gives a more penetrating flight with no "backspin".

A good follow through can help the ball roll on alnding . Perhaps a 7.5 loft with Stiff Ozic Tour shaft can do the trick . I hit dozens of different drivers and found out there a a very slight differnce but not enough to conclude that one manufacturer has the advantage . I hit a no name brand in 9 degrees with a stiff steel shaft 310 yards as opposed to a Tour Department Burner 8.5 290 yards .

My new PING G5 has the Aldila NV-S 65 shaft and the launch monitor indicated very little spin. The driver head is a 9* which might play a part. But I really love the shaft.

So what is optimum.

I think thats its some where around a 14 degree launch angle and the backspin in the 2500 range. Am I close?

Lowering it a degree will get more roll but if he hits the ball at its optimal arc with his current driver he will get more distance out of it rather than a lesser degree with lesser flight time and more roll...the better your arc angle the farther the ball will travel...your ultimate launch angle is between 11 and 13 degrees, that is when you are getting the most distance.

My G5 9* with the Aldila NV65 Stiff measured 12* launch angle. My swingspeed is ~106.

This may help, while not a rule this chart is a good guide.

Thanks Everardo. The chart is most helpful. This guide is pretty close after I spent a couple of days on two different launch monitors. +1 for you

This may sound wierd but tee the ball higher. It will make you sweep the ball off the tee instead of hitting down on it. That should take some spin off.

    • Context:  I am on vacation, so I don't have access to my indoor practice room, and I won't for about a month. Day 12 (August 22).  Today's weather was not one where even I was going to be outside.  For whatever reason, I didn't do the putting drill today.  There was a drill I remembered from this site (the article was something akin to "five things you can do to improve that don't require talent") that involved having an iron along the back from stance, moving to backswing and holding, then moving to forward swing and holding.  So I did that for five minutes today. I also spent 90 minutes at the gym;  my main motivation for getting stronger is golf related (and I really should get back to Fit For Golf  specific workouts;  I'm not sure when I lost that habit, a poor choice on my part that I did).  Funny story, I spent 20 minutes on the Stairmaster today at the gym (the rest was weights and rests), a device I started with shortly after I took up golf because I read something about it in a Butch Harmon book.  I should be following FFG Mike's fitness advice though, not some memory of someone else.
    • Day 8 8-22 Worked on backswing length and getting some speed in backswing. Recorded swings. Was happy with practice session tonight.
    • Day 325 - 2025-08-22 Practiced for almost an hour after cleaning my cabinets to account for the new GEARS cameras and helping @OBlum for a bit. Exaggerating the same old things.
    • Yea, faster greens = shorter putting stroke. You can be more accurate.  Really, I think people who struggle with distance control struggle just as much on slow greens as fast greens. I've seen people blast putts 10-FT past the hole on 8 or 9 STIMP as much as 11-12 STIMP.  I prefer faster greens. Usually means the putting surface is better and again, shorter putting stroke.
