Gross vs. Net Scramble

I have a quick question.  I played a fundraising tournament today.  4 person scramble, no minimum number of drives.

The tournament was played as a gross score only.  My wife (36 hcp) and I (12 hcp) played with another husband/wife (24/38 hcp respectively).

I realize the purpose of the tournament was to raise money for the cause.  However, there were cash and goods prizes.

I don't think I'll do this again unless I play with really good players.  It's very, very difficult to even get close to the scores of good golfers.

Has anyone else experienced the feeling of frustration?  We played really well (for our level) and placed 8th in a field of 15 teams.

Ha ha ha!  Yes, almost every time I play in a scramble. As you said, scrambles are typically for a good cause so at least the money isn't completely lost.  Personally, I avoid playing in scrambles and prefer to just donate some money or sponsor another team.

We have scramble tourneys sometimes. There is a window the team handicap has to fit into, a minimum # of drives per player. Some are gross, some net. As a changeup we will play the handicap of the guy whos drive we took. It can make for some tough decisions.

But as you said, this was a fundraiser where you happen to play golf. If it was a poker fundraiser you would have the same range of skill sets, its just not as noticeable.

Most places around here do a gross side and a net side just to be fair to everyone.  It would be tough playing in just a gross side without having at least one low single digit handicap.  At least you know it was for a good cause and you had a fun (hopefully) time out on the course with your wife and got to get to know another couple a little better.

One of the best outings I played in is a shamble. The way they did the prizes was brilliant. They had a first, tenth and last place prize. This way they let the big guns battle it out. The people who come to enjoy can also get something as well.

I have never seen this type of prize structure, but I think its absolutely perfect for a charity event.

I have only played in charity scrambles and they were all gross score.  I honestly do not really care for them and since I get to play less frequently than I would like to, I have taken to sending a donation and then playing real golf somewhere else.
