Oakmont is the perfect site. The Turnpike is for the most part a non factor. Oakmont is logistically sound, has the history, obvious difficulty, great site lines in person and on tv, etc. Its one of the top 3 US Open sites IMO; if not the best.

I do wish they would use a lot of the other sites they once did however. I was in the minority who really did not like Pinehurst. Wish they would use Merion, Olympic Club, Olympia Fields, and Southern Hills more often. Interested to see if LA Country Club will be a hit and get thrown into the rotation, also Erin Hills next year looks real exciting.

After Erin Hills next year, the Open won't be held in the Midwest again until 2027 at least. 2018-26 is lined up: NY-CA-NY-CA-MA-CA-NC-PA-NY. The USGA rotation isn't accommodating for for anybody who doesn't live near a coast.

You basically only notice the turnpike when you're crossing the footbridges.  You can't even hear the road when you're 100 feet away from it because of the stone walls they built to block the sound.

And Oakmont is not a "less than desirable" neighborhood.  It's a nice middle class suburb. The Club itself is technically located in Plum, which is a also a middle, maybe upper middle class suburb.  Both have very little crime and tons of white people, so golfers would feel very comfortable living there.

Exactly.  the South gets no major championship love, and because people moan about the heat, we probably never will.  Maybe the powers that be will think about a Ryder/President's Cup down here, since September more or less eliminates the heat excuse.

Also weather is an issue. Florida you are almost guaranteed afternoon thunderstorms almost daily.
