I have seen many recommend Google Earth for plotting how to play a course. Anyone know of any websites that documents courses, or allows users to document courses with tips/strategy? It would be like a Yelp for golf courses only.  I think I saw someone mention that on here a while ago, but I haven't been able to locate that.

Yes, Yelp is random - half the time you get some chick telling you about the wedding they had there.

But besides that GolfNow seems to have many reviews:

Here are some for one of my local courses:

I use old Taylor Made clubs from eBay and golf shops.

Bluegolf.com

Search for the course and if they have the "tour" option, then it's pretty handy.  It will give you the info on each hole and it has google maps and a built in easy to use measurement tool.

Ahh, thank you! I think it was bluegolf that I was looking for, but couldn't remember!

There's also http://www.provisualizer.com/index.php. Somebody posted it here on TST once, and I've used it a few times.

It doesn't really let you make notes for strategy, like Blue Golf. But you can go to any course, anywhere in the world and map the course yourself. That's both a pro and a con. You have to do it yourself (all 18 holes, tees, pins, and target points in fairway), but you don't have to rely on their list of courses either.

You can zoom down to a low level to see the terrain.

Once you've plotted everything, you can see reports including a summary of the shapes of the holes and a sense of the elevation (see last one below):

I justt played around with this site and it seems to me that the ruler is ridiculously annoying to use. At one point I couldn't move the markers without scrolling my screen, which prevents me from moving the markers where I wanted to anyway.

Yeah that happens but it's super easy to just start over.  If you click a third time it just restarts with point "a"

Wow, I will have to check that one out, as most of the courses I play have high traffic, so I am sure they are on there.

I like Swing by Swing, but I don't really use it this way, I don't think it has social. I just mostly use it for yardage and shot tracking.

One cool thing about provisualizer is that they have a page that has links to all the courses mapped out for all the majors. If you're watching a major, you can fire up the site and easily browse around the course using their pre-configured strategy pins. I've done that for several tourneys and enhances my understanding of the course.

You can do this other places too, but I've just come to be familiar with navigating provisualizer's interface (which is essentially google earth with some golf-specific markings).

Caveat: you need to install the google earth client for the 3D visuals.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
