I missed close to a 15-foot put by about 6 or 7 inches...

When I went to just knock the ball in without taking the time to line up or swing properly, the ball rolled off the side of my putter and about an extra 14 inches from the hole...

I learned something that day...

This should be funny... I think mine was about 1 foot?

I've missed a good number of three-footers. This is why I practice three-footers and don't accept gimmes if I can help it.

Hale Irwin whiffed a tap-in at the British Open one year. IIRC, he missed a playoff by one stroke.

pretty similar for me as well. Short 98 yard par 3 down hill. Off the tee the ball hit the side of the cup leaving a pitch mark actually around the brim of the cup. My friend wouldnt give me the 1.5 footer for birdie, and then I missed it.

Playing on aerated greens (when I go to Virginia in March, the greens are always aerated), I have missed several 1-footers. On good greens, I once left an 18-incher about 6 inches short, although I'm sure I missed some 1-footers when I was really young.

About 4". My excuse? The greens were aerated and it happened on the 17th hole of the first time I was on a legitimate run to break 100. Turned out it cost me nothing more than a bit of pride as I looped the course with a 92.

Wow, about 75% of people misunderstood the question. I've missed a 5 incher. I played with someone who lipped out a 2" putt.

Six inches. During my club championship, hole #5. I was on my way to a five putt triple bogey on a par three and a really big 99 - finishing really far down the leaderboard.

Playing shortly before July fourth, kid in house by the green set off something pretty big in the middle of my stroke. I jabbed a 18 inch putt 6 feet past and missed the comebacker turning routine par into double bogey. It was a publinks match and it took me three holes to get my composure back I lost 1 up. Still not really funny.

I think its probably about a foot. Can miss alot in the two foot range when the greens are aerated or very fast. I try to remember to 1. Find the line. 2.Note a spot just in front of the putter. 3 Release the putter head over the spot square to the hole and 4 Start the ball rolling straight, not wobbling. All in all short putts are easy if you note the line and roll the ball true. I think they lip out due to side spin imparted by a decelerating glancing blow.

A former European Tour player once said that his only thought when putting was: "Small ball - large hole"!

I do the same when I have to hole shorter putts. Believe it or not: It helps...
