2 Open Slots in my bag

I have room for 2 clubs in my bag, now that I've given the 4 iron to the needy! :) Seriously, I cannot consistently do anything with this iron so I'm giving it and myself a break. 

 

Here's what it looks like today...

 

Driver TM R15 - 216yds (these are 'Typical' from GameGolf Live)

3W Callway XR - 212yds

5 iron - 174 (irons are Taylor Made Speedblades w/Steel shaft reg flex, 2014)

6 iron - 156

7 iron - 147

8 iron - 139

9 iron - 127

PW - 108

AW - 102

54* - 83yd full shot - Cleveland 588 12 bounce, 2 dot

58* - 69yd full shot, maybe but don't hit a lot of full shots with it - Cleveland 588 12 bounce, 2 dot

Putter - old Odyssey blade that I love

 

So one gap is between that 5i and 3w, a hybrid would fit nicely there...but which one? 3h, 4h, 5h? any recommendation for an mfg?

 

and i have no idea what to put as the 14th in my bag, so any suggestions appreciated

I'd suggest a 3h and a 4h.  My bag Dr. 4W 3h 4h 5 6 7 8 9 Pw Sw Lw putter.   Everything (except the putter and lob wedge) are Callaway XR.  I really like the Callaway XR hybrids.  The only thing I'd change in my bag is I'd replace my 4w with a 3w because I hit my 3h about as far as the 4w.  Consequently I seldom use the 4w.

Three questions first. 

1. Why carry a driver if it is only 4 yards longer than your 3 wood?  If your yardage is accurate you might want to look at going to a different loft or shaft.

2.  Do you hit your 3 wood consistently?  If so you might want to look at a matching 5 and 7 wood.  I love mine and they are the most reliable clubs in my bag.

3.  Have you hit hybrids before?  While they look like woods, they swing like long irons.  The longer shaft make them go farther than the same loft in an iron.  So a 5 hybrid should go farther than your 5 iron.

Thanks that's kinda where I was leaning as well, and I love my XR 3W. Me and the 3 wiggle have a good history, it's my go to club for all kinds of shots. Heck I hit it so well that I've contemplated dropping my Dr all together...but nothing beats driving a long bomber out past 250, and I couldn't do that with the 3W.

Open up his GameGolf page, his longest drives are 280 - 290, his longest 3w shots are around 230.  He reported his GameGolf computed averages which can be skewed by mishits, the Driver probably has more marginal shots in the data.  There isn't very much data for the 3w.

Looking at the data I'd say when he hits it good 250 is probably a better estimate of his driver and 220 - 230 is his 3w.

Agree, hitting a bomb with the driver is better than sex (but, just don't tell my wife I said that).  Also, to learn to hit a driver well you have to use your driver.

I bought my Callaway XR's from the Callaway pre-owned site.  I'm really happy with the discount and the clubs are almost like new.

Yeah what @nomulligans said. I can definitely hit my driver further than the 'Typical' distance in GG right now, but there's that darn outlier 174yd shorty skewing my results. I had to triple check the 291 after that round because I just couldn't believe it had happened. So it stays for now.

I'm looking at those FWs in that XR line for sure because, YES! Yes I do hit that 3W consistently! I like the feel of the XR when you strike it true.

I have not hit any hybrids so now that I've narrowed it down to FW or H, I'm going to head to Golfsmith and give each a go.

I apologize if my comment was taken as an insult.  My question was honest.  I had never heard of GameGolf before.  Makes since if it averages your worst shots in too.  My averages are probably pretty low considering my shanks don't make it to the ladies tees.  But I think of my driver as a 270 yard club since it normally flies over 250 and occasionally rolls out over 300.

No worries at all man...as I said before the thought had crossed my mind to remove it but dang it's so cool when it goes long! I'm in Texas so when it gets dry from the heat down here, you can get some way generous roll outs 

GameGolf is pretty cool, and I've seen some deals for under $200 lately. Not cheap but not bad for some tech that really helps me know what is going on with my game.

those are pretty tight gaps

in addition to the big gap between 3w and 5i, you have a space between 9i and PW that looks tasty and another in the 90's missing - GIRs are king

I'd try to fill that approach shot gap first (maybe even get your 4 wedges bent to fill the spaces better), then find a hybrid that you hit around 190 or so

or go without - more room for sandwiches

@skeedawg  The book Lowest Score Wins (LSW) is something you might check out.  That book recommends you spend some time getting your partial swing distances.  I did it along the side fence at a driving range with a range finder.  I have no desire to fill in gaps on my wedges after I went through the exercise.  My SW is the one I hit the most consistent with an "Erik Pitch" style so that's my go to for distances 60 and less.  Other than that I'm using the LW for short shots when I need to go high and land soft with little run out and my PW and 9i when more than 60 yards is needed.  If I want a lot of spin I go to full swing mechanics.

The image is what I have taped to my push cart and have made a card for my pocket when I don't have my push cart.

I would suggest a 4H, plus one of these as the second club:

{ 3H, or 7W, or 5W }.

compare the 4H to 3W in yardage, and split the difference in distance with one of the three that you can hit best.

Note: some people find a 7W gives better blast out of the rough than a 3H.

Assuming you are happy and consistent with the clubs you listed I'd throw in a club or two you can cuss and blame......a 2 iron or 64* wedge maybe?

The only 'hole' in your bag appears to be at the 175-210 yard range.  Here's the question:  Do you see a number of par-3 holes in that range?  Can you even hit a green from that range and have a NEED for clubs that fit that yardage?

If so, it sounds like your club choices would be 3- or 4-hybrid clubs or 5- and/or 7-woods.

what degree is your 3W and what degree is your 5 iron? 

my 3 and 4 iron are replaced with mizuno fli hi hybrid irons (21 degrees and 24 degrees). 2 forms of hybrids would fit nicely in that slot within your set I think.

I added a 64 Callaway Mack Daddy ll to my bag last year. No regrets at all
