I have been using my TM R7 10.5* regularly but thinking of using my Titleist 8.5* on a windy day. Would that help me?

Hitting the ball lower will help, but a driver and shaft combo that will produce the least amount of spin on the ball. You want to deliver a knuckle ball type drive.
I was watching Playing Lessons from the Pros on TGC and that question came up and that was the response he gave.

It might help a little, but at a 36 handicap that small of an equipment change probablly won't be noticeable. I would use what ever club you were more comfortable with.

If you can hit the 8.5* well, it would certainly help. But why sacrifice one for the other where you may need to hit one high with the wind? To that end, many times I carry two drivers with the different degrees you mentioned, and just replace the 3 and 5 woods with a 4 wood.

I think the one you hit the best is the one to stick with when you are a 36. Just make sure to make a smooth swing and hit the center of the club face. If you want to hit one high downwind, you can always hit your 3 wood.

Hit your 10.5 b/c with your handicap the higher you get the ball the more distance you will most likely get...its all about the arc of the ball and spin on it...honestly there is not a huge huge amount of difference in distance on a windy day. It's not worth risking hitting a club that you aren't as comfortable with to get an extra 10 to 15 yards.

To quote Davis Love III: "When its breezy, swing easy."

The first time I put that into use, I hit the ball nice and straight down the middle of the fairway, not to mention out a distance that I was more than happy with hitting directly into the wind.

I did this today. My tee shots weren't the problem, amazingly, despite the awful wind we had these past two days. I hit 10 fairways today and outdrove people both into and with the wind that I had no business outdriving. Not that I'm competitive, but when I'm 35 yards further than someone, and almost lose a ball in the fairway because I'm looking 50 yards back from where it was, it's worth noticing.

And 10.5 degree driver. It's hitting the greens and knowing which club to play into them that's the issue! I hit a whopping 3 GIR today, and one was so far from the cup it might as well have been the wrong fairway. On the plus side, I only took 2 putts per GIR: 2, 1, and 3, in that order. To let you know how bad the wind was on one hole: I normally hit pitching wedge into the green following my usual drive. I hit 5-iron (knockdown, so 7-iron distance) today.

It's just like when you move back tee boxes, you don't change clubs, you just adjust your game to it and eventually it becomes natural to you. Before you know it you will hit the ball farther because your body adjusts to what you need to be doing without you even noticing. Your body is an amazing thing, with the amount of things you can do and how you are able to do them, just trust in yourself and don't change equipment.

    • The term I hear most often is "double teeing" which means the course/club has starting times from both the #1 and #10 tee.  I have encountered this many times and we know if we are the first group off #10, we may well get to #1 and have to wait because there are groups still with tee times yet to tee of #1.  In most instances, where the course/club has a starter, he normally explains this situation.  In this case, the pro advised what you would could/would encounter making the turn to #1.  And, that is exactly what happened.  Probably would have been wise to talk to the pro after playing back 9 and ask when you could go off #1 since apparently that club does not double tee.   Regardless, the outburst towards the other group was uncalled for.  And, I don't blame the member for being upset.  As a member of a private club, you are responsible for the actions of your guest.  I have played many times as a guest in the UK and I am pretty damn sure my host was responsible for my actions while at the club.  I know at the clubs I have belonged to here in the US, that is the way it is.  As a matter of fact, the member may find himself being brought before management and facing possible suspension.  So, I don't blame him for being upset.  However, as the host, he really should have stepped up and put a stop to the OP's actions.  OP makes this statement "I now understand that standards are different on the "private course." But I'll take those lessons to the muni, too."  No, the standards are not different.  You, sir, seem to be just a bit hard headed and belligerent, even if you are college professor...which possibly explains a lot.   JMHO
    • Day 32: worked for about 10 minutes on my drill. Filmed it as well for a check in. I think it’s slightly better but still seeing some issues.
    • Day 44 (26 Dec 25)  -  played in the Friday men’s shootout with a twist - used the Toney Penna persimmons and MacGregor blades - had a blast playing these clubs.  They really help in zoning in on making solid ball contact.  Scoring was solid - had several looks at birdie and had a few par saves.  Overall a day of focused course management.
    • Day 2: 2025.12.27 Eighteen holes at Kauri Cliffs. Focusing on trying to keep flex in right leg during backswing.
    • Day 136 12-26 Had a different practice planned today but life happened. Worked on "wide to wide" and still working on remaining flowy. Starting the club head in front of the ball as a drill, is helping with the flow of the swing.
