Best Shot of the Week

I had a bunch of poor shots yesterday... but I did manage to make a few good swings. Two shots stood out for me as solid shots for me, though:

1. My 4th hole of the day... I was sitting left of the fairway with about 120 to the pin. I made a good swing from a sidehill lie (ball below my feet) and the ball lifted and seemed to hang in the air forever. When it landed on the green... it was about 15 feet left of the hole, but the slope of the green carried it closer and closer and it finished about 6 feet from the hole. I missed the birdie putt badly, but made the 3 footer for par.

2. My 15th hole of the day... a downhill par 3 listed at 143 but playing a little LONGER because the wind was in our faces. My 8 iron started out just a little left of the hole and the wind moved it a bit right. The ball hit and popped back a few inches. It ended up 9 feet - 2 inches from the hole... but JUST outside the winning closest-to-the-pin shot. Again, I missed the putt... but tapped in for par.

4 shots come to mind. All with long irons, two from the tee and one from the fairway and one from left of the fairway. First a 180 yard 4 iron onto the green within 15 feet with a beautiful draw. Second was a 5 iron from left of the fairway with a severe uphill lie to a 160 yard green over water. Put it to 20 feet. I missed both the birdies though.

Both of the next two were 3 irons from the tee. First was on a short par 4 350 yards with a perfect low draw and using the right to left downhill fairway put it to 120 yards from the green. Second 3 iron was on a long par 3 216 yards but it's downhill so it plays about 200 maybe a touch more. I hit it a tiny bit thin but put it on the front fringe.

My best shot over the weekend was probably my second shot on a par four. You see, I topped my drive shot and it rolled maybe 30 feet. I know, quit laughing! lol, anyhow, my second shot I drove it 3 feet from the cup and followed it with a birdie. I also sank a 25 foot putt but I still say that second shot was better.

Man, I have to go a little further back since I haven't played in about 4 years but it was a tournament during high school and the hole was a long par 4 and I got it in two shots.. I was simply floored because I didn't think the ball went it. From where I was it looked like the ball overshot the green when i made my second shot.

I had a good 40 foot putt to make for birdie. Putt was down hill at the edge of the green. I put the ball 2 feet next to the cup. Easy tap in for par.

I haven't had an amazing shot this week. Although on a par 3 course I hit a great shot with my 8 iron with backspin that finished less than 3 ft. I was very pleased that i made the putt. I knoq I'm not great but I'm hoping to practice a lot over the summer.

This past Sunday I was on hole #7 at Sterling Farms in Stamford, CT. I was in the trees on the right (sliced my drive) about 125 out, ended up punching out a 5 iron through some large trees and rolled it up to the hole (1 foot away). Walked away with a bird. Greatest shot of my week for sure.

Second time on my current bases course, 18th hole needed a 16' putt to force a mini playoff. Had a nice cutback and had just enough power behind it to roll in.

Played in a charity 4 man scramble Monday. I literally hadn't swung a club in 3 years. Set up on the tee with my driver. Swung once and completely missed the ball. Took a step back and then hit it straight about 225 yards. It was one of my few shots we used.

Shot of the day.

Hit my sandwedge over a huge tree. It was the smart yet still risky play that helped me save boggie.

    • Finally, birthday number seven, just short in two & pitched to about 5 feet.  front nine all done! Also, got a lucky eagle on three, caught a nine iron a smidge  fat, never left the  pin landed short and rolled in the hole
    • @collegefbfan-That is a lot of text in a row. Paragraphs please.-Tough for my old eyes to read. The article is mebbe worse than the other one-This guy does not even 'write good'. It is not worth the time to read or discuss-Really. There are bad instructors-He is a worse writer than many bad instructors are bad instructors.

    • Thanks for including me on this article.  I really appreciate it.  I will try to explain what my objectives are and what I have done in the past with other instructors.  I have been to five instructors in 4 years.  Some of that time included a year layoff.  I told each one that my main goal was to make good contact and hit the ball straight, I didn't care about crazy long distance.  I know other things matter when hitting different clubs, where the ball is placed in the stance, rough or sand, etc.  1st instructor (about an hour away) was PGA certified, and he was more worried about me watching him hit his 6 iron straight than teaching me anything.  For the little time he watched me hit, he watched me hit ground ball after ground ball with no advice or suggestions.  2nd instructor (1.5 hours away) was better, but it was more about club lag/lean without really telling me how to do it.  3rd instructor (about 40 minutes away) was PGA certified and said he taught a relaxed swing.  I never really got what that meant.  4th instructor (1.75 hours away) was at a very nice country club and PGA certified with all the stuff a student would want.  Never looked at grip.  Also told me that the "wrists take care of themselves in the swing".  Really?  Have you seen all the questions about wrist hinge and timing?  Tells me to get weight on my lead foot/leg but no drills or thought processes on how to accomplish it.  Most current instructor (50 minutes away) looked at everything.  Checks grip, has a way to have my weight on my lead foot/leg, etc.  I said hey when do I come back.  He says after you have become comfortable with these "short" shots and making consistent contact, we will discuss a good time for another lesson.  I know being PGA certified matters to a lot of folks.  I sort of relate it to this:  I have had my vehicles worked on by my step grandfather, my father in law, my brother in law, even myself.  None of us are ASE certified, but it got fixed without tons of wrong guesses as to what it could be.  I am just a 50 year old guy that should have taken the game up 20-25 years ago.  I have always liked the sport a lot.  Just wanna be a guy that can hit the ball consistently and not hook, slice, and shank every other swing.  Many thanks you all.
