Recently I decided to go "full old school" with my swing.  Hips turned back, left knee behind the ball at the top.  I had always tried to resist turning my hips - but I recently discovered that it seems much better if I don't.  If I resist with my hips, I don't have enough flexibility in my upper body to accommodate for it.  Trying to do it for so long has ingrained some flaws . .not to mention giving me a sore right hip and 2 back spasms over the course of 3 years.  It wasn't the x-factor thing directly that hurt my back, I don't think, but the compensations I made to account for me not being able to do it right.

Of course I did some searching on TST and didn't find anything more recent than 2011.

What is your current thinking on this?

#2 is an ideal position for me.  LIke . .when I pretend in my mind that I'm a pro golfer . .I'm not going to pretend that I look like Tiger woods anymore . .I'm going to pretend that I look like this, instead.

Surprised after almost a thousand posts you haven't come across these threads.

I left this browser tab open in my phone when I saw it late last night and was gonna post almost the same exact thing.

Do you have a Member Swing thread, @Rainmaker? If not, why not???

Amazingly I had not seen half of those threads - that was good reading, thanks!

The lack of a my swing thread has been for 2/3 reasons . .1.  I'm taking lessons so I get regular feedback . . 2.  In my practice area I can't back the camera far enough away to show the ball and everybody I've sent swing videos to . .even when I specifically say there's a ball that you can't see . .says something like "swing is meaningless with no ball", lol . .and 3 . .to lazy to do something about #2.

We're actually moving to a new house this weekend . .at my new place I'm not going to have a practice area for a while but . .and I just thought of this . .I probably will have plenty of room for my camera on Sunday . . so I'm going to make it a point to take some swing videos . .I need to send a new one to my teacher, anyway.

My first instructor tried to get me to restrict my hips and stretch my upper body like a rubber band against it. The results were disastrous and I am glad I didn't stick with that idea longer. It seems like an easy way to injure yourself and actually generate less power due to less room to accelerate. I don't buy into the idea of your body snapping back like a rubber band.

My last instructor and I experimented with this idea, I think he wanted to see how flexible I was. I could not reliably do this without swaying and/or getting stuck on my rear foot.

At 59, I believe I have no business trying to restrict my hips.  It's much easier on the back to turn the hips.

Is that Arnold, pictures on 1st post?

@mvmac or @iacas, is it possible or detrimental to over-rotate the hips (as in more than 45°? How about opening them up too early in the backswing?

Yes you can rotate them more than 45 and be good. Not really detrimental if you rotate them properly, meaning rotating the hips somewhat centered and on their inclination (or it would be very rare).

Some players can have the appearance that they rotate too much when they have a reverse hip slide backswing, hips sliding towards the target on the backswing (and shallow).

Got it. Thank you.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
