By "implemented", what does that mean? If your partner is looking for his tee shot and you're ahead and ready to play, and you don't and wait, its that a penalty?

“Ready golf” is to be implemented at this year’s Amateur Championship as the R&A steps up its attempt to improve pace of play in golf, with chief executive Martin Slumbers insisting that players like
Jason Day have a responsibility in that respect as “role
models”.

The R&A would be waiving rule 10-1(c) for match play, the part were the opposing player can have the golfer cancel the stroke and then proceed to play in the correct order.

Quote

c. Playing Out of Turn

If a player plays when his opponent
should have played, there is no penalty, but the opponent
may immediately require the player to cancel the stroke
so made and, in correct order, play a ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played (see Rule 20-5).

Then there is no rules violation anyways then except the part where if both parties agree to do it to give one an advantage over the field. Then it's a disqualification.

I think it is pretty much just a golf etiquette thing more than a rules violation issue.

It's still a breach. It's just a breach without a penalty attached.

The Rules of Golf. It's still a breach, there's just no penalty.

The Rules say play in a certain order. So if you don't, you've breached the Rules. It's just that there's no penalty in this instance for that breach.

Sort of related - at our state golf association rules seminar apparently, they apparently told the people there that agreeing to play ready golf breaches Rule 1-3. My head nearly exploded with anger when I heard that. Sounds like this definitively disproves that. As does the actual rule of playing out of turn, but I digress.

My personal opinion is that ready golf should be automatic for everything except match play. Frankly, I just do this myself without asking. I'm not going to wait while you fish out a tee and your ball from a pocket. Kudos to the R&A for doing this. I hope more tournaments follow.

Ok didn't realize that. Certainly off topic, but in my mind, if there's no penalty then it's not really a rule, practically speaking.

Good for the RnA for doing this.

    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
    • I agree with @klineka & @DaveP043 above.  When a new member first joins the club they cold be told that they are not eligible for tournaments until they have an established HCP.  As you said, it only takes a few rounds.  If they do not to post HCP that was their choice and choices have consequences.  If playing in the tournament is important to them then they should step up and establish an HCP.  Maybe they miss the 1st tournament, is that a real big deal?  And if it is a "Big Deal" to them then they had the opportunity to establish the HCP. As for not knowing how to report for HCP I assume your club has a pro and they should be able to assist in getting the scores reported and I suspect out of state courses may also have staff that can assist if asked.

    • Cool here's my tweak, "If a player’s ball lies in the general area and there is interference from exposed tree roots or exposed rocks that are in the fairway or 1 club length from the fairway the tree roots and exposed rocks are treated as ground under repair. The player may take free relief under Rule 16.1b.[But relief is not allowed if the tree roots only interfere with the player’s stance.]
