Hi!

I will most likely travel to Austin, TX, end of May for business but want to play some golf as well (would be fun to try something non-European...)!

Any recommendations? The course needs to offer rental clubs, obviously...

Probably I will make a stop-over in Washington DC or New York before I head home to Sweden, so those places would present options as well, I guess.

Thanks!

Texas?

Damn, it's a shame you couldn't come to Florida, where real golf is available!

If you specify a location within the general area (e.g. near the North Austin Hampton Inn), some suggestions might follow.  Or, if you can say you will have a car and a completely free day to drive & play, then courses further a field might be suggested.

Would be really cool to try out Florida golf, so I might fly out via Miami and spend two days there (instead of sightseeing Washington DC...)

You are correct, a more specified question would have been better but I simply don't know yet... And can plan from suggestions... ;)

If you can make it work, a better option golf wise would be to fly out through Orlando.  I don't know how the flights align for you though.

If you're in the Washington DC area, I might be able to join you for a round.  I live just east of Dulles Airport, and play golf about 20 miles further west.

You might be interested to take a look at our member map, to see where some of us live and play golf.  I don't see anyone close to Austin, but we have a nice group near Washington DC, a good bunch scattered through Florida, and a couple near New York City.

Please add your own home town of golf club to the map, it would be nice to see a pin in Sweden.

There are several good choices - but for a first time visit, if you can stay there and golf I'd suggest looking at the Omni Barton Creek Resort. They have four courses. If you want additional suggests just say so, and I have some friends in the area and I'll check and see what they suggest.

The white tees are always an option.

Pin added! Cool map, I seem to have put the first pin in Sweden... :)

The current plan is to go to Washington DC or NYC (can´t make up my mind) May 25 and leave May 27. There seems to be a lot to see in Washington DC...

Understood! Might work as well. Our corporate travel will soon run out of patience with me and my questions, haha.

Will try to find out what is manageble!

That place looks really nice!

Anyway, how do one golf in the US when travelling without company? In Sweden you simply call the caddie master and ask him/her to book you onto a available spot and you get whatever company available. Is it the same in the US?

Pretty much the same thing, here you call the pro shop and the pro (or one of the assistants) will get you a tee time and set you up with clubs and a playing partner or group.
If they are doing a good job of it they will ask you about your game and get a feel for who to put you with, if there are choices on the tee sheet.

    • Day 16: range night! Worked on long game for about 40 minutes, with a good solid 20 minute focus on my priority piece. Things improving there. Bookended that with some wedge and driver work. Finished up with about 30 minutes of short game. Working on distance control and all types of shots and lies. Short game is probably as good as it has ever been.
    • You should be able to install it yourself, honestly. You could easily blow it on and use some one-sided duct tape or something so it stays in place. That's what I've done with one of my grips.
    • Day 22 (12 July 26) - worked on putting tempo today using metronome for accurate tempo.
    • Hi all, My Edel putter seems to have developed a rattle.  I don't think it's a big deal, as I mostly hear it when I'm tapping down ball marks on greens.  However, I am debating getting it fixed, especially as I intend to play a lot of golf in August and September, and to continue playing regularly after that of course too.  My issue is I think fixing it would entail the fixer (golf shop repair station?) removing the grip and, presumably, applying a new one.  My problem is two-fold.   First, I like the grip on it, although after eleven years, maybe it's worth replacing.   The bigger (second) issue is getting the grip.  I don't like the flat-fronted putter grips anymore.  I have the round one on my putter, and I suppose I could buy one from Edel's website, but would a golf shop install a grip I bought elsewhere and brought in?  Or could they order one if Edel is not a supplier of theirs?  I don't recall ever seeing any Edel products in a Roger Dunn or PGA Superstore, although the era when I would go to a store and browse has long since ended (for better or worse).  I'd also wonder what the timetable is, as I'm leaving for a seven week trip in under three weeks. Any suggestions on what to do would be very welcome, whether about the rattle or the grip, together or independently.  Thank you!
    • I'm glad to know that picking up grass and letting it go doesn't help.  It felt like it shouldn't, but I'm glad to hear there's a good reason why.  It makes sense that wind is different higher up than it is near the surface. For a while, I was in the habit of checking the prevailing wind direction before playing.  That helped if I wasn't sure.  However, I still am not really sure whether something is a 5% wind or a 10% wind (and, of course, I know that a "helping" wind helps about half as much as the same wind hurting).   One of these days, I'll learn how to figure out what to do differently if the prevailing wind is 10mph vs 20 mph.
