What part of your body does YOUR swing speed come from?

When I'm playing well, it feels like my legs, core, and shoulders are all in sync and the power is really flowing through my arms as I approach impact. Not that I'm actively thinking about swinging them hard, but more so than other parts of the body I feel energy through them; I really feel a snap or whip through the ball. The thought is definitely synchronized power that flows through the arms into the ball.

If I'm not playing well, the feels are all over the place. Sometimes it feels like I'm actively trying to power-swing with both arms, sometimes maybe just one arm feels more dominant. Other times it feels like my arms are wet noodles and my body is doing the swinging. The only consistent thing is that my body does not feel like it is in sync, my tempo is probably horrible, and it definitely shows in my scores.

I read Knudsons book and after that I tried to implement what he said.  Load on the backswing and unload on the forward swing.  Arms along for the ride.

Didnt work.

Regardless of personal feel there has to be muscle activity in the arms and hands to keep the swing in synch with the pivot.

Again we run into feel not being real.  You can swing and look 'connected' great without thinking pin arms to body and turn.

Its being in synch that counts imo.

For me if I think pivot and let the arms ride my left arm gets pinned across my chest my space is compromised and I don't have enough pivot to get out of it.  I can't use that feel when I swing.

For me what works is hands.  Like a lot of folks say skipping a rock.  It's not exactly that but it's similar for me.  When you skip a rock your body sequences a certain way if you have done that enough, as I have.  For me it's the same sequence in a golf swing and for me things workout better with the mind in the hands vs on the body.  When I skip a stone I don't think hips first but they absolutely do go first every single time.

There is a kinematic sequence that produces power in the golf swing. How a golfer feels the golf swing is entirely individualistic.

I feel no whip like movement in my swing. I feel more what I am working on. Right now it is a certain feel in the back swing then feeling like I swing the clubhead out towards the ball. It might feel more like I am swinging my hands out as well.

My distance comes from fast arm speed.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

  • 2 weeks later...

I did some measurements yesterday with my iron 7 and a low cost swing speed radar. So in reality swing speed might ab bit higher (when I look at my actual distances) But this does not really matter.

Here are some results.

1) Swing speed with focus on the wrist. Not much body movement. I am was getting speed from 65-75. But this speed was very inconsistent.
2) Swing speed with focus on hip/body turn. Also similar numbers. 66-75. Also not very consistant.

With both on this options to reach 75 I had to put a lot of effort in my movements which probably would give a very bad ball strike. And 75 did not happen most of the times.

On time I managed to control the hip turn and active wirst snap with both hands and I got close to 80. But this was very difficult to do and just happened once.

Then I tried something different. As I am not very flexible and only play golf for one year I realized that I do not fully turn my body during the upswing. My back tilts around 45 and not 90 degrees normally. So this time I really put some effort in twisting my body as much as possible so my back is pointing to the target. This gave me 70 mph. But every time (!!) now. So this was way more consistent than the other options. The next thing I did is to completely loosen my wrists. This gave me another 2-3 mph as this created more lag. So looser I felt after this tension the higher the speed. When I tilt up that far I have no chance to actively control my arms, hips or wrist any more. So this movement is 100% passive (compared to the others). It feels very uncomfortable but I think it has to be that way to build up tension.

When I add active hip rotation this add add another 2-3 mph which will get me close to 80. But at the moment this difficult for me and I think gives no enough control I think. I yet have to try if I can hit any balls with this "new" swing thought.

    • It’s going to change but your basic setup feel should be about the same. Your body kind of adjusts to length and lie angle of the club. You’ll want to pay attention more to ball position as you change clubs more than how bent over you are. I understood what you meant from what your wrote.
    • Oh I probably was thinking the wrong thing or the wrong way when I typed the golf swing was more of a body swing (in my mind).  The in my mind part probably should have said in my opinion or based on what I have read.  Just meant the body needs to be involved more than the hands and swinging the arms while the core remains still.
    • The answer to this question is a very small change in impact can cause a BIG impact in direction. This is with the driver, but its similar with the irons... How much does an open or closed clubface affect your drives? | RoboTest Want to hit more fairways? The latest edition of GOLF's RoboTest highlights the importance of driver face angle. For a driver, 1 degree of clubface open or shut causes 10 yards of left or right. When you think the rate of closure for a golf club, how fast the club face goes from open (top of the golf swing) to square (at impact), 1 degree is a small quantity.  This means, when you are looking at video of your swing, you can see the exact same swing, but present the clubface in two widely separate positions. More so if you have swing faults. You can make the same backswing, but not get your weight forward well and hit a fat shot. You then react to this, try not to fat it so you thin it. Maybe the timing is off on the extension part of the downswing and you thin it slightly. Also, certain swing movements cause the wrists to flip at impact. The intent is still to hit the ball with the club. So your hands are going to adjust to find the ball. The more they have to adjust, the more difficult it is to repeat. Nope, it is way less mental than physical. If we could all think our way to a better swing, we would all be PGA tour players.  #GOLF IS HARD!  Beginners have repeatable swings, just bad repeatable swing. We all just need to make repeatable better swings.  The golf swing is a battle of making movements that allow the club to do good things. You results are from a bad swing that has a wider range of outcomes. Your outcomes are probably the following. Way more thins, fats, skulls than most. You hardly see PGA Tour players fat, skull or thin a shot.  The first principle of golf is FEEL IS NOT REAL. Meaning, we can feel things in the golf swing, yet it produces results or shows on video as something else.  You just set up to the ball. The club has a different length, so you need to adjust. For most your arms extend more out as you have a longer club. You also bend over less for longer clubs. It is just something you get used to. If you make a fist and stick your thumb out. You want that width from the butt end of the club and your belt buckle. Now, if you taller or shorter than most, then you may need to adjust the length of your clubs.
    • At address? I think so. Downswing and through? IDK. I doubt if a whole lot of golfers, if any at all, deliberately think "I have a 9-iron so I need to bend half an inch more through the downswing compared to my 8 iron".
