Just bought a used XG 7 putter to try.  I tend to bend over a bit more than usual and I am going to try and get a straight back and straight through stroke and get it right.  The putter is a 34" and it seems like it may be a little too long. I am 5'8" and I think my arms are a little long.  I want to cut one inch of the putter.  I was wondering if it would effect the putter to cut it off one inch and regrip it with the same grip. This shouldn't change the actual weight of the putter but I was wondering if it would change anything else.  Any suggestions.  Thanks

Reducing the length of any club will lower the swing weight...like choking up on a bat.  That is not, necessarily, a bad thing and could, in fact, be an improvement.  You may want to experiment with gripping down 1 inch...or not.  Personally, I find a shorter, lighter, putter more to my liking.

No man. Taking an INCH of SHAFT that has WEIGHT off the club, does in fact reduce the weight and has an affect on the club. You are a 18 handicap - don't go tinkering with your clubs. You don't know what you are doing yet. Go to a professional for help.

You could do that... With a putter it won't effect much. If I were you I would have a fitter or clubmaker do it though. Just to make sure it is done correctly. (The cutting down part anyway)

I'm around 5'9" and am very glad that I got a 33" putter.  Arms are able to hang more naturally without having to grip down on the putter and and my stroke felt a bit more fluid that way.  I'd agree that you should have a professional do it, just to make sure it's done right.

Looks like that putter is face balanced, so you made the right choice for your straight back-straight through stroke.  Best of luck and enjoy the new putter!

I am going with 33".  It if feels like the head is too light I'll add a little lead tape.  I doubt very seriously if I will be able to tell any difference.  I have another putter that is 33" long and it feels more comfortable to me.  Thanks for all the input.

I cut the putter off and re griped it. I like the feel of it and I feel more comfortable.  When I get in my stance I have a inch or so of the end of the putter sticking above my hand and my left arm is pretty straight in line with the putter with my eyes over the ball. I am trying to develop the straight back and straight through stroke.  When I hit the sweet spot on the putter it feels great and hardly makes a sound.  Problem is I am not hitting it most of the time.  I have always brought the putter back too low and I think I am not picking it up high enough to hit the center of the ball.  What is strange is I can be walking off the green and putt it one handed with my right hand and it sounds perfect but when I put with both hands it sounds different.  I have a mark all the way around the ball and I can pretty well roll it end over end.  I really like what I have I have just got to start hitting it solid.

I can't really tell any difference in the putter except it is shorter.

Try imagining that you're putting over a stack of 2-3 coins placed before the ball.  That'll help you hit the ball's equator.

    • Feel like you are left side dominant. Keep the back of your glove running through impact. Keeps leading edge down without digging. You will pick them clean with some zip if the grass is nice and generally acceptable results off anything less than ideal. Works with both hingy or dead hand pitches and chips.
    • Day 52 (30 Apr 26) - Had planned a solo round, got invited to be part of trio that included a fmr mini tour pro.  Was fun playing back a set of tees and having to stay in my game plan. Both were very engaging and encouraging in the round.  A good day in working through and making smarter shot choices.

    • I mean, a golfer is trespassing and damaging property. So, golf rules don’t supersede state laws. 😉 Like, if it isn’t marked and is off golf property. The right thing to do is take an unplayable lie or take stroke and distance.  Also, this is a liability for the course. The homeowner could easily say the course is liable for damage done because they knowingly didn't mark their boundaries which allowed golfers to trespass and damage property.
    • Interestingly enough, if the course (the Committee in Rules terms) doesn't mark the boundaries, there is nothing out of bounds.  I realize that neighboring homeowners would take a dim view of golfers whacking balls from their backyards, but that's what the Definition of Out of Bounds requires. "All areas outside the boundary edge of the course as defined by the Committee."
