This video demonstrates why it can be OK to be across the line at the top of the backswing:

Any thoughts?

Same thing I've said on several occasions. Steep to shallow. This is actually a question for the 5SK Instructor Certification exam.

IMO it can be fine or a fault to be across at the top depending...  A good reason to not be a 'do it yourself' golfer based on silly you tube videos.  A good pro can help you however you swing.  Cause and effect in golf is far beyond just looking at you tube.  You need some help.

People posting videos like this and saying see it's not bad what I do really lack some understanding imo.

I don't know. According to the OP he's an 8, so he might need a little help! And I don't know if I buy the guy's whole spiel, but "steep to shallow" kind of describes Jim Furyk's swing perfectly! And I wouldn't mind having his money!

FWIW, there have been some great golfers who strayed across the line. Bobby Jones and Sam Snead are two who immediately spring to mind, Both of them would cross the line, "just a touch", and then do a little "throw it over the top" move. Just enough to put the club right back onto plane.

I don't agree that Sam or Bobby were "across the line." When the swing passes parallel, "across the line" is actually on-plane. That's why the shaft is pointing "left" of the target line before it gets to horizontal (at the top of the backswing).

Snead also didn't really "throw it over the top" either, but that's not really the topic here.

What lack of understanding do you think Chris Ryan demonstrates in his video?
