OK, so @SavvySwede and @billchao inspired me and thought this up:

The presentation laser originally used is 5mw. It is too underpowered. 50mw should make it easier to spot. Afraid of blinding someone w/50mw though. Paranoid?

Now mounting is the tricky part but an old iPhone Gary Fong camera tripod adaptor I had lying around unused is the key.

It screws into this (which I'm using as a dashcam mount), which clamps onto the putter shaft. I'll use the bottom right ball mount. It'll serve as a platform for the laser.

The laser will be housed in this:

Multiple options to put laser on tripod adaptor, Gorilla tape, double sided tape, drill a hole, screws, whatever. Should be easy to secure.

Power supply is easy enough, can just tape that to shaft: http://a.co/e13jZfR

The great thing about this setup is it's flexible. You can adjust where it points easily and it has a wide range of where it can point. Change the laser lens to a line and point it down or point a dot straight in front.

You can also make a base with a little rod in the middle, clamp it onto the rod and do the mirror stuck to the putter head method.

Total for everything is $40, but I already have the Gary Fong adapter, it's $20ish used, not in production anymore, but you could probably use your giant smartphone tripod mount to do the same thing.

Something like this as a finished product is going for $120.

Thoughts?

I'm planning on getting an Edel one day and permanently put aside my aiming problems. The laser helps you learn your aim bias and how to adjust but you're going to have to keep practicing it or you will just revert to it eventually.

I'll suggest again.  Put a small mirror on the face of the putter, with double-stick tape, it should be simple to align the mirror flat against the face.  Then put the laser on the ground, next to a wall, pointed at your putterhead.  If you're aligned properly, the reflected laser should be on the wall directly above the laser itself (due to the loft of the putter).  The angular error is doubled because of the reflection, so you should be able to learn to align yourself pretty precisely.

Smart!

    • I'm quoting myself, only because I want to link up to the relevant information from the Rules.  These are the current rules, but I don't think the 2016 version differed very much.  First is Rule 16.1, for relief form Abnormal Course Conditions.  A cart path is an Immoveable Obstruction, one of the four ACCs.   Others have quoted the provision that you can't take relief for an unreasonable stance or type of swing, it sounds like relief was appropriate in this case.  The Reference Point is the Nearest Point of Complete Relief, and a diagram is provided.  So we refer to the Definition of the Nearest Point of Complete Relief.  The NPCR allows relief from the cart path, for the type of swing the Player would have made if the cart path had not been there.  Specifically, the Definition says: "The nearest point of complete relief relates solely to the particular condition from which relief is being taken and may be in a location where there is interference by something else" So there might be interference from a tree or bush, a clear swing isn't guaranteed.  I'll go back to Clarification 16.1/1, which says that Relief from an ACC might result in better conditions, or worse conditions.  However, the NPCR for a ball in the General Area MUST be in the General Area (Rule 16.1b), its not in a Bunker of a Penalty Area.  That's not to say you might not have to stand in a Bunker or Penalty Area, just that the Ball won't be in it. You can find all of these on the Rules of Golf app on your phone, or on the USGA's webpage: https://www.usga.org/rules/rules-and-clarifications/rules-and-clarifications.html#section=rules&itemNum=19&subItemNum=1
    • Maybe they wouldnt be tearing them up if shots that  miss the green or fairway were penalized with deep rough
