I am getting a new driver this week. I tested out the F7+ and was happy with it. I like the price of the triton but heard it had a very closed face which I hit left so I am unsure about it. I have heard amazing things about the Grenade 2 but haven't got the opportunity to test it. Any advice? Also does golf galaxy carry X stiff shafts or should I just order online. Never bought a new driver so I am uneducated in this field

Golf Galaxy usually gives you a free "fitting" when you purchase over $250 or so for a club. It means you hit balls in front of a GC2 launch monitor with a salesman behind you letting you know what he recommends. It's actually not as bad as it sounds.

If you want a proper fitting you can spend something like $100 at Goltec. A proper fitting from a club fitter will be anywhere around and above $150. Then you'll get what you need.

Golf galaxy does have X stiff shafts. I was told that X stiff is like stiff from a few years ago, so needing one is not out of the question. If also depends upon your height. If you are really tall and need a long club, X stiff might be the way to go. If you are hitting worm burners on the LM, probably best to go with stiff which is the old regular.

General rule of thumb is above 105 SS can use an X stiff, but above 115 it's probably a good idea, but height factors into this one.

Is there a particular reason you are limiting yourself to just those 3 specific models? If you are concerned about price, you can always buy used/prior year models and save yourself a ton of money.

Unless you know the specific shaft model that you want, I highly recommend getting fitted. X Stiff shafts are not all the same. I went to a Taylormade fitting, I hit stiff shafts the entire time, but saw drastically different ball flights and spin numbers based on other specifications of the shaft. Plus lie angle is another important piece they will help dial in for you as well.

It looks like the F7+ is around $300, you could definitely do a club fitting and get a year or 2 old driver model for that price.

Since my driver fitting, I have so much more confidence knowing that the club/shaft setup I have is fit specifically for my swing

Grenade 2 - from what I heard, it's whether the stock shaft fits your swing and your setup at address. Of course, you can say that about any driver.  Sound may be loud. As long as you can return it ...

Ditto the above statement. When I was trying shafts for my new PING G400LST I hit 4 of their offerings. The difference in them was unbelievable. The Kuro Kage Xstiff launched super high and spun like crazy, as did the stock Alta shaft. The Project X HZRDUS was better but the Tour 65 was the best. You have to get on a launch monitor, or at least hit them with real balls on a range or you can get a poorly fitted shaft that will cost you big time on the course.

I was of the mindset, "Oh a shaft is just a shaft. Get the right one for your swing speed and you'll be fine". I couldn't have been more wrong with that thought. It was crazy to see the difference in launch angle, height, spin, etc. simply by trying a different shaft. My clubfitter even was able to explain why my prior shaft that just came with my old driver wasnt the right one for me, even though the old shaft and my new one are both stiff flex.

My shot shape has changed from straight or slices right to straight/draws left and the only thing I have changed is the shaft and clubhead. I am still getting used to the new driver, but so far after the first 3 rounds with the new driver, my distance has increased from 254 yds average to 264 yds average without thinking about anything different.

Definitely get fit. Its worth it.

Triton. Just because I swore no one would buy it.

I agree with Mr.Desmond on the Grenade 2.  I know people that have it and they kill it.  Plus, Mr. Desmond has trustable golf club knowledge.

The Triton like someone mentioned as having a closed face...yes, sooo closed its nauseating to look at.

I don't like to give out shaft advice since too much of shaft selection has to do with more than just clubhead speed.  That being said, if your only choice is flex and your swing speed is 115ish you'd have a better chance of x working before stiff IMO.

Let me clarify - From what I heard about the Grenade 2, it's a matter of shaft fitting you, may be a tad soft, and the sound may be a bit loud. They've improved the aerodynamics over the original. I do remember a time at the range early this spring when a very large young man in his 30's with a bad case of the dunlap blues tore the cellophane from his brand new original Grenade, saying that he'd heard it was the hottest driver out there ... and then he proceeded drop kick it, hit it right, left, and otherwise spray it all over the range. It was sad but funny at the same time. I just stopped and watched. Try it anyway as long as you can return it. BUT ...

Of the three, I would first try the F7+ with different shafts. I've heard good things. And you've tried it.

Clubs are strange beasts - they are all good, it's what you get along with best that counts. Some you will detest that you thought you'd like. Others that you didn't think you'd get along with, sometimes come alive.

    • I have trouble with vertigo on occasion, but have gotten nutritional and biofeedback tips to keep it at bay. Dehydration can help trigger v-like symptoms so one recommendation, along with maintaining overall hydration, is to start with 8 oz. of water early in the morning. A meta-analysis on Golf As Physical Activity indicated that golf is rated as a moderately intensive physical activity. This scientific literature review came from the University of Edinburgh. The physical activity level ties into hydration. A former university colleague was a marathon runner who had published a couple of articles on endurance training. He likewise said that golf was a moderate physical activity especially when the round stretched past  the two-hour mark. For hydration he recommended switching from water to electrolyte drink on the back nine (past two hour point of exercise) to prevent cramping. At the two-hour point of moderate activity, water starts flushing electrolytes out of the body, which can lead to fatigue and cramping. (I have had trouble with leg cramps in the past during exertion.) During a round, I start out with water on the front nine and switch to sports drink on the back nine. If the day is unusually hot, I may drink 8 oz. of Pedialite concentrate before going to the course. Maintaining overall hydration plus on-course boosters keeps me going.
    • Personally I’d try booking direct first - either via the Vidanta golf reservations number/email or through the resort concierge - especially for Christmas/New Year. Vidanta’s main courses (Greg Norman and Nicklaus designs) are popular and can book out fast this time of year, so direct often gives you the best shot at your preferred tee times.
