If I thought I was good enough to make 1 million per year for the next 10 years on the pga Tour, with a small chance I make a breakthrough and do much better, I would take that 6 days a week and twice on Sunday rather than get $35 million to sit on my ass.

Why?  Why put forth all of the time and energy and hard work to maybe make that kind money when you can just get it and then do anything that you want in life.  Kim can still golf  and do anything else he wants to.  The rest of his life.

It would just be more fulfilling to me.  Being close to the best at something and performing it on the biggest stage is a blessing most of us never get to experience.  Being rich and and filling your time with hobbies isn’t nearly as interesting  to me.  Yes he can still golf.  That’s not exactly the same as playing on the pga tour and probably many majors.

If you won the lottery and got $20 million tax-free but they told you the only stipulation was you had to quit your job, would you keep working?

The answer is simple.  It depends on how much you are earning. If it is 50,000 a year, then heck yeah. If it is 5 million a year and you can work for another 10+ years, NO. So it all depends on how much you can earn doing what you love. Of course, me personally I would take 20 million because I don't earn that much :-(

I think @Zekez hit it right on the head, while @pganapathy swerved close but missed.

There are no guarantees on the Tour. Players "maybe" can make that kind of money if they win. They have no guaranteed "earnings" other than endorsements, and you don't get those unless you win. Or consistently finish near the top. And that money can go away.

Tiger might be the one exception to that rule.
