I hardly ever leave a ball on the range that I've paid for. Usually for me, about mid-bucket, anxieties go away, I groove a swing, and become relaxed and calm, a very therapeutic feeling takes over. So different than a round. I have tried to take this positive feeling/mindset at the end of the bucket to an unscheduled round, thinking I would put up a memorable score, but it never has worked, so I quit trying this. For me there's not a tight correlation between range hits, where I hit multiple balls per club, and golf shots during the round, when I might use the same club one or twice and in different ways. It's like first shots all the time.  I wonder sometimes if range work is a big part ritual. Anyway, interesting post.

Recently I've only been going with 3-4 clubs (50 balls) and I treat every shot as if I'm on the course. (pre shot routine etc) If I'm playing well and I have 10-15 balls left, I'll chip/pitch the rest otherwise I leave with notes to research or work on my next session.

No I don’t leave early. I may, on occasion, move to hitting different types of shots if I feel I have engrained what I wanted to work on for that day. For instance, if I am working on a certain move and I m hitting this ball really well with that feel, I may only hit a certain amount of balls and then start working on trouble shots or partial wedges or something.

I spend range time shooting targets with 2 or 3 clubs, 5 balls max per clubI, tend to finish off any range time with 5 balls saved for driver.

and with my limited skill set, hit it as hard as I can with no thought to where the ball goes. Just hip turn and swing as hard as I can.

That's always one of my practice activities-practice swinging faster

No I don't, like others I may do some partial wedges.  The only time I'll leave early is if I'm getting fatigued and am masking mistakes.  No point in doing bad reps.

I will answer yes and no.

No - when I am there working on things.  I will keep hitting targets and shots... that why I came to the range.

Yes - when I am hitting a small bucket before a round to get warmed up.  If I am hitting them good and feel ready I will grab my clubs and head to the first hole.

If shots from a full swing are all going well, I'll switch to pitching and finish the bucket with those shots.

So I'll leave my full swing early, I guess, but there are other things that need attention as well.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
