At least that's what the article says. And "green opium" is a nickname. And I thought the government thought it was countercultural and subversive.

Very surprising due to the recent crackdown on golf courses.

I thought the same thing. I know there was a big to-do about it, but it was related to government corruption.

Maybe they're trying to develop into a golf powerhouse as a nation.

May probably get more popular if any of the two players who just got their tour cards do well.

Well, they used to think that cars and any clothing other than "Mao suits" were subversive at one time. The Chinese government is an interesting combination of Idealism and Realism.

As far as government sponsored golf programs go. look at how South Korea is so dominant on the LPGA Tour.

Yup...that was it.  We talked about it here at work since we have quite a few Chinese nationals working for us.  It was more about cracking down on government officials using golf as part of corruption than the sport itself.

Fairways and Greens.

"To instill manners"

That is a big social problem in China. Many of the rich are aholes, not all, but too many for the government's liking. . .
