I plan to head to Scottsdale over New Year, first week of January.  I am a female golfer moving from a high handicapper golfer to a mid level golfer.  We would like to spend the week playing, having lessons or participating in a clinic and basically focussing on improving golf.   Don't want to spend a fortune unnecessarily or be just one of a big group with different objectives but I do want to enjoy the week. Haven't been to AZ before so not sure how to make the decision on a) area to stay b) accommodation c) golf pros or lessons d) golf club e)anything!!

Any input from this group of experts would be welcome, thank you!

For starters, maybe consider surrounding areas rather than Scottsdale. While the area is very beautiful, it also is in the high rent districtand everything will be more expensive.

Phoenix is a golf mecca and caters to many levels of golfer price range.
There are many great muni courses along with many very nice golf resorts.
Many resorts have great golf packages, prices are definitely lower during offseason. January is peak season, prices will be very high at all courses.
It is also difficult to get on many courses during January unless one makes advanced arrangements.

Take a look a The Wigmam resort, it is a very old course on the west side of Phoenix.
Possibly check the internet for golf packages or consult a travel agent.

@golferjane I would suggest searching through the previous posts on this site.  A lot of people have posted about a lot of really nice courses in the Phoenix area (which of course includes Scottsdale).

Beyond golf itself... I enjoyed both Old Town Scottsdale, and Tempe, when I visited this past May.  They both have a nightlife and good food options.  Tempe does have a younger crowd than Old Town, but I didn’t feel out of place in either (I’m late 30’s).

The Phoenician.  It is beautiful and not very long.  There are 3 9 hole courses there.  Make sure one of the 9's u play is the course that ends with the par 3 behind the hotel carved into the mountain.

We went there years ago and I played some nice places I got on with my PGA card.  Then one night we went to The Phoenician hotel for drinks...and I saw the holes in the mountain and never forgot seeing them. Now, 20 years later we were back out there for her work and I played there.

Nice outdoor patio at the hotel for drinks too.

Here's a few pics...

Or the Phoenician. She said she didn't want to spend much money so she doesn't have to worry about those two anyway. That is the most overrated course in the Valley. There is only 18 holes there now too.

    • Day 16: range night! Worked on long game for about 40 minutes, with a good solid 20 minute focus on my priority piece. Things improving there. Bookended that with some wedge and driver work. Finished up with about 30 minutes of short game. Working on distance control and all types of shots and lies. Short game is probably as good as it has ever been.
    • You should be able to install it yourself, honestly. You could easily blow it on and use some one-sided duct tape or something so it stays in place. That's what I've done with one of my grips.
    • Day 22 (12 July 26) - worked on putting tempo today using metronome for accurate tempo.
    • Hi all, My Edel putter seems to have developed a rattle.  I don't think it's a big deal, as I mostly hear it when I'm tapping down ball marks on greens.  However, I am debating getting it fixed, especially as I intend to play a lot of golf in August and September, and to continue playing regularly after that of course too.  My issue is I think fixing it would entail the fixer (golf shop repair station?) removing the grip and, presumably, applying a new one.  My problem is two-fold.   First, I like the grip on it, although after eleven years, maybe it's worth replacing.   The bigger (second) issue is getting the grip.  I don't like the flat-fronted putter grips anymore.  I have the round one on my putter, and I suppose I could buy one from Edel's website, but would a golf shop install a grip I bought elsewhere and brought in?  Or could they order one if Edel is not a supplier of theirs?  I don't recall ever seeing any Edel products in a Roger Dunn or PGA Superstore, although the era when I would go to a store and browse has long since ended (for better or worse).  I'd also wonder what the timetable is, as I'm leaving for a seven week trip in under three weeks. Any suggestions on what to do would be very welcome, whether about the rattle or the grip, together or independently.  Thank you!
    • I'm glad to know that picking up grass and letting it go doesn't help.  It felt like it shouldn't, but I'm glad to hear there's a good reason why.  It makes sense that wind is different higher up than it is near the surface. For a while, I was in the habit of checking the prevailing wind direction before playing.  That helped if I wasn't sure.  However, I still am not really sure whether something is a 5% wind or a 10% wind (and, of course, I know that a "helping" wind helps about half as much as the same wind hurting).   One of these days, I'll learn how to figure out what to do differently if the prevailing wind is 10mph vs 20 mph.
