After 8 years away from golf when I was just learning, I've started back up again. New equipment, lessons, etc. Yesterday, after 8 years away, I went to the driving range. Just like riding a bike, nothing had changed. Topped shots, slices, a few good chip shots. Just like riding a bike. Lol! Looking on the bright side, I've got all winter to solve these issues. I had fun though. I'll be ready by the time spring shows up.

The nice thing about all those bad shots is that on the driving range they don't count against you. In fact I would almost rather get those out of my system there then on the golf course. The most annoying thing is when you hit a great shot and wonder why you can't do that on the course.

How cool! I expected something entirely different from the title of the thread, Thought the OP might talk about striping drives long and down the middle, but no, he was honest!

I feel this way every Spring when I first pick up the clubs.

I think in some instances taking up golf, after a long layoff can be just like riding a bike. The difference being golf will probably take a little longer.

I was away from the game for 2-1/2 years. Didn't touch a club. Before the layoff, I was a pretty decent golfer. It took a few years to get to, and keep my  decent game.

When I was able to get back to my golf game, it took less than a year to get a new, decent game. Due to physical limitations, I knew I'd never get my old game back, but I still managed to get with in 5 strokes of my previous game.

I think mental recall speeds up the process when successfully starting something over after a long layoff. Much like riding a bike.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
