My uncle Gene  when he was alive was a circuit pro and lives in California. When he game up to visit he showed me that if I kept my elbow to my waist during my drive my slice went a away and if exaggerated  it would be a hook.

I still have problems out of sand traps by the green especially when there is different sand from course to course. DOES ANY ONE OUT THERE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Welcome to The Sand Trap!

For bunkers, I recommend aiming for a spot about an inch behind the ball and "thumping" the ball out when in a greenside bunker. Take a bigger swing than you think you'll need. #1 goal should be to get the ball out of the bunker and onto the green in 1 shot even if that means aiming away from the flag.

Good advice given already, but to add to it- if you're greenside, be sure to open up the face of your wedge a very good amount.  And as @klineka said, look at a spot an inch or 2 behind the ball and strike through that sand with a good thump.  Feel like you're keeping the loft of the club and thump the sand onto the green- not the ball.

I typically open my sand wedge to the point where the grooves are facing my left foot (and I play the ball way forward). I then hit the shot much like a pitch shot from around the green, but as @klineka has already stated I aim 1-2 inches behind the golf ball and thump the sand. I am by no means a bunker shot master...but I have improved tremendously.

Don't forget to dig in with your feet to help give you a good solid base.

I try and keep my lower body pretty still and swing through the sand and ball.... don't decelerate or you will be hitting another sand shot.

1 inch is good enough. Most people hit too far behind the ball.

To the OP,

Use more of a proper pitching technique that utilizes the bounce of the wedge.

I don't dig in much. The swing is short anyways.

The lower movement is minimal, but there is a slight turn towards the target.

I love bunker shots - I don't go in that often, but when I do I enjoy the challenge.

I found 30 minutes spent with the pro on  bunker shots was the best lesson I ever had. Since then, I've found I've got better by practising different lies  (buried lies, slopes, hard sand , wet sand etc) and knowing when to change my approach.

    • Day 58: night putting session for about an hour. Started with lag putting and ended with putts inside 9’. I need to work on putts from 6-12’, but in a solid spot overall.
    • Birdied a different #6 today (incidentally, also a par-5, but not the same one on which I previously birdied).  Here's the funny thing though:  it's the par-5 that caused me to post my "how do I avoid bogeys?" on par-5s recently.  So I guess I still haven't parred that hole.
    • Day 20, May 24.  Played 18 today, very poor ball driving.  One GIR, and it was a 4-wood from the rough.  Several other instances of hitting a green on a full swing (and at least one full swing motion -- a 50% UW) that wasn't for GIR.   Still shot an 87 and even had a birdie (chip-in).
    • Welcome to TST.  I spent a bit of time in the UK but I had to look up Wagon Wheels.  Don't think I ever saw them.  Had to Google to see.  Couple similar items in US but Google says they are different. 😁
    • Day 264 5-24 Worked on getting chest through and arms down infront of chest. Contact isn't great yet but on video looking better.
