I've been playing for a year and a few months.  My iron swing has gotten fairly reliable.  I am (was) a used club ho.  Recently I started hitting some Speedblades and Adams A3 irons.  I love them when I hit them well, but I started topping them like mad even when moving the ball back.  I've concluded that the highly cambered soles and the short southern grass don't mix well.  Would it be wise to have them bent strong to bring the leading edge down?

That's not what's causing the problem.

Not even a little bit. You aren't topping the ball because of the camber or bounce on your clubs.

No, no. Please listen to @iacas. I'm not sophisticated enough to tell you the various causes of topping (I'll bet a search in Instruction on TST will give you some ideas; or a quick look by your pro.) I do know that the irons and wedges I play are beveled and cambered. I play most shots a bit more forward than most. I don't top when I keep my head relatively steady and my weight a bit forward and stay in posture (no standing up), thanks to my instructor, leading to an ascending strike. Anyway, please don't hurt your clubs before you explore further. Best of luck, -Marv

Well, if that's the case then I suppose I'm holding my wrist hinge and lag too long...seems to get worse when I'm tired....I'll work on it. Thanks.

I doubt it.

Very, very, very few people regularly "hold their wrist hinge and lag too long." Particularly higher handicappers who top the ball.

Film your swing.

Ok, but fair warning it's very upright...That's probably part of it, but being tall it's either bend clubs up or extend them...The curious thing is the Speedblades are identically soled but bent up 2 degrees....and I rarely top or blade them....

One last thing.... I had some worn MP 37's I loved and rarely bladed or topped.  They barely have any bounce and are thin soled...The shafts were as stiff as the Adams irons.. This us what made me think it's the soles/grass. They were not bent upright.

It's not.

I can hit this club well, and in the air, without topping the ball, and it has a lot of bounce:

This was a dead straight 170 yahhhd 4 iron uphill.  Landed right on the crest of the hill....not sure how much rollout it woulda had.  You can see how narrow my stance is and how much lean I use to play it closer to me and not toe it even on a tee.

What am I supposed to see there?

High bounce isn’t making you hit tops.

Tops come from bad technique. Though poor equipment can cause a person to develop bad technique, depending.

Here is a good video showing you an pitch on hardpan.

I was hitting poorly, then I realized I was keeping my weight forward...to the point I was having spasms in my left leg. Do you think I'm using too much lean or playing it back too much?

I'm not even really sure what this is about. The topic is about one thing, and it feels like now we're on to our third or fourth thing.

My recommendation:

  • Create a Member Swing topic.
  • Find your priority piece, focus on that, and work on that alone.
  • Don't be distracted by one range session here or there, or something you read, or whatever.

Perhaps this can shed some light on the topping problem.

    • Day 24: did a stack session. Worked a bit on downswing feels during breaks.
    • Day 444 - 2025-12-18 Light day of hotel room work. GEARS Summit v2.0 today. Good day.
    • Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.
    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
