Hi All,

At a recent charity day there was a putting contest with the winner splitting the proceeds equally with the charity.  The person that won did not genuinely qualify - they did not make the putt to be in the contest in the first place, but knew the guy organizing and asked him to put them through anyway.  This person did make the putt later on to win and ended up with about $1k in their pocket.  What's everyone's view on this?

Not good, guy should own up to it and donate the entire winnings to the charity.

The organizer’s a buffoon. The guy didn’t cheat. He asked to be put through and he won. Hopefully he told he organizer he’d give it all to the charity.

I'd alert the charity in question that this happened.  I don't think they'd be happy knowing this happened.

Nope, he took the money and ran! And it's only me and the organizer who know what happened.

Unfortunate. But I don't really understand why he was allowed to go through. At least he could've been told if he gets a free pass and wins then all the money goes to charity.

I always go back to the root cause on most things. The organiser let the guy compete. If there was any cheating, it's on the organiser.

Agreed. The guy basically got a special exemption. The question is whether the organiser had the scope and authority to authorise this - if not he seriously in error and should be called to account for it.

He didn't, and didn't for one second think the guy would actually win.  but he's not going to admit to putting him through now.  The winner will do anything to win.

My guess is that most of us have heard of some shady stuff happen at charity events, golf or otherwise. Always a distasteful thing

End of the day, the organizer is responsible. Make a note and avoid him in the future.
