I played a round the other day with a fella I once worked with a few years back. He just got back from Carnoustie and The Open. He happened to mention that he shared a table with Brandt Snedeker at Carnoustie and found him to be a really nice, down  to earth guy. I had noticed the Carnoustie bag tag he was sporting. Guy's name is Tony and is a "Brit".

Great score. Yeah ...it’s the golfball. Just makes these courses obsolete with that kind of distance. Wait...this is Snedeker? Oh.

So quick opinion...is shooting 59 on a par 70 layout any less of an accomplishment than shooting 59 on a par 72 track?

In some ways it could be more so. Less par 5s (usually) so less holes deemed to be good scoring opportunities. Par 72 you obviously have to be farther under par, but have more par 5 holes that are typically scored on better. Let’s just say the are relatively equal IMO.

Awesome.

I'm avoiding the Golf Channel to miss the "but it wasn't as good as so-and-so's 59, but it's sure better than this other 59" conversations I suspect may be going on.

It's a less impressive achievement than shooting 59 on a par 72.

That doesn't make sense. He didn't ask if shooting -10 on a par 70 or 72 is worth extra consideration. He asked if shooting 59 was worth more on a par 72 than a par 70.

The par 72 course has more "scoring" opportunities, but a 4 is still a 4, and a 4 is tougher to get on a 555-yard hole than a 455-yard hole.

Hence a 59 on a par 72 is a better accomplishment than on a par 70. Just like it's better than a 59 on a par-54 executive course. 🙂

So it is easier to go -11 on a Par 70 than go -13 on a Par 72? Seems like a dumb question (13 under would appear harder than 11 under) but honestly asking since scoring in relation to par on par 5s is statistically lower.

Oh and side question: How many sub 60 rounds on the PGA tour have come from par 70 Vs par 72? Just wondering if anyone knows I’m curious but lazy to go look it up lol.

Sorry if I’m veering too far OT.

Scoring in relation to par is lower. But scoring in relation to ZERO isn't lower - it's higher. It's easier to get a 3 or a 4 on a par four than on a par five.

I was curious what the official lowest 9 hole scores were, 26 is the lowest by Pavin.

Quote

The List of Lowest 9-Hole Scores on the PGA Tour

Starting with Pavin's record-setting 26, these are all the golfers in PGA Tour history who have scored 27 or lower over the front nine or back nine of a tournament round:

26

  • Corey Pavin, front nine, first round, 2006 U.S. Bank Championship in Milwaukee (par 34)

    27

    • Mike Souchak, back nine, first round, 1955 Texas Open (par 35)
    • Andy North, back nine, first round, 1975 B.C. Open (par 34)
    • Billy Mayfair, back nine, final round, 2001 Buick Open, (par 36)
    • Robert Gamez, front nine, third round, 2004 Bob Hope Chrysler Classic (par 36)
    • Brandt Snedeker, back nine, first round, 2007 Buick Invitational (par 36)
    • Chris Riley, front nine, second round, 2009 Legends Reno-Tahoe Open (par 36)
    • Nick Watney, back nine, third round, 2011 AT&T National (par 35)
    • Paul Casey, back nine, second round, 2014 HP Byron Nelson Championship (par 35)
    • Sergio Garcia, back nine, second round, 2014 WGC Bridgestone Invitational (par 35)
    • Ryan Palmer, back nine, second round, 2015 Humana Challenge (par 36)
    • Jim Furyk, front nine, final round, 2016 Travelers Championship
    • Brandt Snedeker, front nine, first round, 2018 Wyndham Championship

Souchak, like Pavin a 15-time PGA Tour winner, was the first PGA Tour golfer to record 27 for nine holes. He did it at the 1955 Texas Open, which was a historic tournament for Souchak. In the same round he shot 27 for nine, Souchak tied the tour's then-record for 18 holes of 60. He went on to win with a total score of 257, which was the tour's 72-hole record until 2001.

Furyk's 27 in 2016 was part of the first round of 58 in PGA Tour history.

great round - you can really tell when the player realizes they are in a special zone - they just move like they've achieved a super powerup

great putting on the back nine (first nine)

then great approaches on the front (2nd nine) - Which I find a lot more fun to watch

      • It is. So, just 2 and 3 above now. 😄
      • Hopefully this one is better
      • Patrick Cantlay's strokes gained from 2024: I wonder if he takes more time on approach shots given that was the worst part of his game last season. And then here are his 2023 stats: Much better ball striking season. I wonder if there are any differences in his times between these two seasons. I tend to think he's just slow in general, but it'd be interesting to see his time differences.
      • Not sure, I think players have their own pace. Speith was always slow, regardless if he was in contention or not. Well, more so when he was in contention. It might be a push there on that question.
      • Without knowing the study at all, this could be more of a reflection of who is tournament ready and who isn't. If you have a quick trigger, it could mean your swing is working really well. Fidgeting, lots of rehearsals, maybe means your swing's not functioning as well as you'd like it to and you need more time to feel it all out before you hit your shot.
