My simple answer to your initial question would be "yes", at least in most cases, because of the design, grooves, weight distribution, etc.

My choice like others have mentioned is to use the extended set through 53*. My first "specialty wedge" is 56*. I have a 52 Vokey but don't carry it, because I am more consistent distance wise with the 53* AP1 for full shots, but the Vokey was definitely more spinny.

Pitching wedges usually have iron-like heads more adapted for full swings, while Dedicated/speciality wedges have chunky heads more adapted for partial swings and chips (yes usually with more spin).

If you are mainly using the wedge for full swings, the set PW is better.  If you are mainly using the wedge for partial swings, the dedicated wedge is better.

I came to this conclusion after trying both types over a few years.

That's a good way to think about it.  Probably explains why I hit my "U" set wedge better than the 50 degree I bought to replace it.

I play a set of Cleveland HB irons, (need all the help I can get). The PW is 44*, (rather strong) the Gap being 50*, I hit both with a full swing depending on distance. However I also carry a 52* Gap wedge which I got custom made for me when I took chipping lessons, it is made by Fourteen and I use it around the green, say 50 yards and in. I know it kind of takes the place of the gap wedge that came with my set but I just like it better for short chips. I have a 56* Callaway sand wedge as well and I just started this year trying to hit that on shorter chips as well as out of the bunker. I find wedge selection to be as personal as putter selection, each has their own feel. I may drop the gap wedge that came with the set as I'm finding it less used and redundant to my 52*.
