So, I am a fan of the Volvik Vivid series. I'll admit it, I like the colors. Judge me not too harshly. I can't help it they just look cool. Plus I find them much easier to follow in the sky. Sometimes I play the white ones, sometimes the orange sherbet ones, sometimes even the lime green ones. Having said all of that, this post isn't about Volvik Vivids.

It's about these golf balls:
I was in a sporting goods store and saw these for cheap. The weather is getting crappy and I figured what could it hurt to try these as they are about 1/3 the price of Volviks. Maybe they could be my "crappy weather" ball?

I teed it up on the first hole and "Wack!" …"What on Earth was that cloud of powder?"

That was the ball exploding off the club face The cover literally comes off the ball when you hit it.

I've never seen anything like it before. I took a picture of before and after ONE SHOT with the ball. The outer surface of the ball literally comes off in one strike. You can literally see the cloud of I'll call it dust that flies off the ball on impact. After one hole the ball is nearly completely smooth. I was wondering if they are allowed to say "Matte Finish, High Visibility Cover" if that matte finish and cover comes off after the fist hit?
Needless to say I'll stick with my Vivids.

I'd write to the company. That obviously shouldn't happen.

Good idea. I probably should have thought of that. I'll let you know how it pans out.

I love the Vivids too. Like you mentioned, I track them better in flight and can spot them a mile away. That said, Cut Golf Yellow feel almost identical to the Volviks for $19/dz...might check them out for your "bad weather ball". They have 3 matte colors...and white for the normal guys too. www.cutgolf.co/collections/golf-balls

This just reminded me that I bought a box of Nitro Pulsar's (matte finish, lime colored) for like $12.50/dz at Wally-World to check out...after reading your experience here, maybe I'll just give those to the kids to test...

@Joey, Thanks, brother.

I'll check those out. Today is 33 degrees and raining like a big dog. So, perhaps I can get out there still a few more times this year.

I wanted a yellow ball but I think the Snells are only two layers in yellow, correct?

Yeah, gotta be a manufacturing glitch. I remember when the first 2 piece balls were coming out. My Brother teed up a "Lee Trevino" by whatever company made them, and the damn thing split in half when he hit it, each half whirring off into the trees on either side of the tee box!

I notice the package says "Conforms with USGA Rules". Didn't know the USGA allowed disintegrating golf balls!

Sorry, didn't see this question. Yep, I ordered them. I got the orange and a urethane sampler pack. I got them in a couple of days. Between work and the fact that it started snowing here I haven't had a chance to play them. I will say they are priced well and certainly arrived quickly. I'm anxious the give 'em a hit.

Okay, so I ended up contacting the company via facebook. They IM'ed back and forth with me for a few minutes. They asked for my address to send me new golf balls. They also asked for my golf size. Anyway, yesterday I got 15 new golf balls in the mail, along with 3 golf gloves, and a golf towel.

So, I give them credit. They are trying to make it right. I hit the balls yesterday and they do seem to be okay. (Although, they are not going to make it as my "winter ball", I like the Cut Brand balls better.) Over-all, all is well that ends well.

    • Day 27 - 2026-01-16 Played 18 with some of the usual "too many voices" going on when I'm working on swing stuff. Fun to get out in great bay area winter weather.
    • I know one recent college grad who's trying the same thing.  This guy was a Division III All-American, went on to play one year at Division I LSU, and is not working hard.  He won the Gulf States Open, a pro event, and made it to the second stage of the Korn Ferry Tour School late in the fall.  And didn't make the cut to get to the final stage.  I won't talk about swing or play stuff, but I believe there are a couple of things that are essential.  Obviously, talent, and drive, or work ethic.   I can't tell you how to do it, but you HAVE to get through it.  Golf is going to be your life, and it takes lots of work. Two more things that are really critical.  You'll need the facility to be able to practice.  My young friend stayed in Baton Rouge, as a past player on the team he can still use the LSU practice facilities.  And money.  Its unlikely you'll be able to work a full-time job and practice the way you will need to.  You'll probably need backing, from a parent, from a consortium of friends or club members., something to support you. Good luck, its not an easy path, but anything is possible.  Another young man from our area, Mike Brennan, just won for the first time on the "big" PGA Tour.
    • No one in the world is as smart as Phil thinks he is.
    • Get more comfortable with being uncomfortable. If you don’t like practicing then give up now. You don’t have the passion to become a pro. Unless that mentality changes you won’t do well under stressful situations.    Call the PGA Tour and ask. They probably have resources available.
