  1. I started playing again 4 or 5 years ago after an 8 year hiatus. Like you, I showed up with a GBB. The first club I replaced was the driver, and I have no regrets for that. I'm onto my second driver now and I can't tell you the last time I popped a ball up with my Ping G30, just doesn't happen. In addition, off center hits just don't punish you as bad. I'd seriously consider getting some of the newer technology if I were you ... imho.
  2. I played in the Golf Channel end of year tournament here 2 years ago. We played Copperhead, Island, North (and Fox Hollow off the Innisbrook facility). I liked Copperhead the best. It seemed like the course that was tough but fair. Was cool playing the "snake pit." I don't think it's as snaky as it reputation implies though. Seems like the Island was my least favorite, really narrow and if you missed the fairway those scrubby trees kinda sucked up your ball. Had a blast though and really enjoyed the experience (even though it was some of my crappiest golf for the season). Hope you have a great time too.
  3. Yeah, was just looking at that, so if you win the "walk up lotto" or something in that vain, then it sounds like a really good deal. I'm guessing compared to "courses of similar esteem in the US" doing the "stay at our hotel to play" is pretty reasonable too? Wow ... three rounds of golf for L130 ($177) . https://www.standrews.com/play/courses/old-course/booking-the-old-course/winter-package-2018. Am I reading this right.
  4. Just out of curiosity, what might one expect to pay for a round of golf here?
  5. The couple of times I played there with the Golf Channel it didn't seem to be overwhelmed with other golfers. Like you, I'm a bit skeptical that private membership will be able to sustain it.
  6. Wish I could get motivated to do this, I've found these two sights that don't require a lot of special equipment: https://furthermore.equinox.com/articles/2017/08/golf-workout?slide=6 https://furthermore.equinox.com/articles/2017/08/golf-flexibility Edit: ahhh, just noticed this is old and Chris probably doesn't care, oh well, maybe it will help someone else.
  7. If Tiger and Patrick Reed get paired together on the final day will they both where red and black?
  8. Sundays headline ... TIGER COMES IN THIRD, on a side note, Charlie Hoffman won
  9. Personally I hope he does well. But, given that he hasn't played competitively in a while, I think the odds are against him, and this would apply to ANYONE in a similar situation. My hope is that he is able to play without injury going forward and that he sticks with it because there's going to be a lot of second guessing why he's not winning every week and is he washed up. If he sticks with it, I don't think he'll continue to dominate the way he used to, but my bet is he'll get back to being competitive again.
  10. Now that you've had this thing for a while do you still like it? Does it seem to be accurate?
  11. Love my "Golf Buddy." Just push a button and the Golf Buddy tells me (using voice) the center of the green or hold the same button and it tells me front and back. I don't have to struggle looking at some display that I can't see anyway with my poor reading eyesight. I have a Bushnell laser rangefinder too but I typically just want to know where's the middle of the green is at. Occasionally I'll use both the golf buddy and rangefinder to verify if the pin is front, back, etc. Golf Buddy's are relatively inexpensive too, usually around $100. As far as blind shots go, the golf buddy may not be a lot of help for that, and a better GPS that has mapping will be a lot better for that, but I personally don't usually miss not having those sort of capabilities. On rare occasion I'll use my 18 Birdies phone app for course layout with GPS, but it's usually just too much trouble.
  12. Well, your index is a lot better than mine and I won't tell you what's wrong with your swing, because you're obviously doing a lot of stuff right, but I can tell you what causes me to do a "snap hook". When I try and "swing hard" (as opposed to fast, still trying to square the subtle difference in my thinking concerning the difference) I get up on my toes. This causes my club head to close and I typically pull it too. The tip toe stuff seems to work for Justin Thomas and Lexi Thompson, but I suspect that's their typical shot and it's their standard swing as opposed to what I try and do when I try and hit it hard without making a conscious effort to keep my left foot flat.

  14. Initial cut at the schedule is posted. Seem to be more one day single player tournaments on the weekend in 2018 than this year. Is it too early to get excited about next season ... I hate winter!
  15. I've won a few tournaments, my recent win I was really happy to take the trophy for as a GolfWeek regional finals 2 day tournament where I won the C flight (14 to 19 handicap) in a playoff. Made an eagle in a CGA tournament this summer which was the only highlight for that round. And, sadly, I'm still trying to break 80 but break 90 regularly ... it's gonna happen next year!
  16. There's a tournament this weekend that's one of the last one's of the year. I've been eyeing it for the last 10 days as soon as the 10 day forecast was available. Initially, I thought that yeah, it's gonna be a bit chilly but I can manage it because it's the last chance this year I'll get to play competitively. As it got closer to tournament time and things starting firming up with the weather I reluctantly decided to pass. Initially the first tee time was starting at 11:00 and odds are I'd end up tee off closer to 12:00 with my flight. It was changed to a shotgun start at 10:00. It's suppose to be 34 degrees, 7 mph wind, and mostly cloudy at 10:00 AM and 31 degrees at 9:00 which is when I'd normally get there and start "warming up." The high for the day is suppose to be 44 degrees which I could live with, but the morning temps are just too cold. I may regret not playing ... but as the OP said, how cold is too cold to play golf? Guess my answer is 34 with a little wind.
  17. I play in a local meetup group here in the Triangle area. It's a great way to meet golfing buddies. They can be hit or miss though and you might be lucky to find one in your area that's active. Some folks just like to join meetup groups and never play and some folks create a group only to find it's a lot more effort and money than they expected and never schedule any events or let it fizzle out quickly.
  18. How does that apply to different areas of the country? The conditions here in NC are still pretty good and I'd say we should still be recording scores. At some point in the near future, the grass will go dormant and leaves will start becoming a real problem for finding balls. You'll have to start hitting off of something pretty close to dirt soon but it typically is not a snow and ice situation. I used to just keep Golf Channel tournament scores for my index because it didn't really matter to the guys that I played with and Golf Channel had their own handicap system based on tournament events only. I've started playing in CGA and Myrtle Beach World Am events and quickly found out that my index should be lower that what I was initially reporting. Sooo, I've been recording everything for a while now and it's come down to what seems about right. Going by the " Section 7 PREFERRED LIES (WINTER RULES) AND ADVERSE COURSE CONDITIONS " rules, it sounds like most of the winter golf I play here in NC should be recorded because things don't often get that extreme here and when there's snow on the ground, I'm not gonna play. I'm trying to gauge what's the right thing to do because I know that as conditions get worse, my index will go up.

  20. I put a 60 in the bag about a year ago. I initially got it so I could hit full swing approach shots from 60-70 yards. I also carry a 55 (had the loft strengthened a little to fit with my other lofts for wedges) which was my go to club for a lot of shots partial shots around the green and pretty consistent full swing 85 yard shot. Was hoping that the 60 would be similar to the 55 in consistency of ball contact for full swing shots. Sadly, it hasn't worked out that way. If you catch it a little fat it just kills the distance. Maybe that's worked into my confidence with the club and I often mishit it. On a different note, I used to use the 55 as my sand wedge and have found that the 60 is a better mouse trap there for me. Jury is still out, I have mixed emotions about the club but, don't know what other club I'd put in the bag if I pulled this one out.

  22. I stumbled across Sophie Walker in GG profiles. Don't know her but seems she's on the Ladies European Tour. Looks like she's somewhat active using the device. Did a google search looking for other pros that are GG active and didn't come up with any. Anyone know of other Pros that use GG actively?
  23. That's a great idea ... we have a local par 3 course that is lighted for night play. I'll keep that in mind, sounds like it's easier to delete too much redundant information than trying to recreate it from memory.
  24. Well, actually it's just a big field and I do walk to get the ball I hit. Often I'll hit 3 balls and then go fetch them and then hit back to where I hit from to start with. A lot of my goal is just to get some exercise in ... chasing balls down is a lot more fun than power walking , but as you said, GG is probably not practical for "the field".
  25. I carry a 5 iron and 4 hybrid (adjustable lie/loft). Use both of them often during a round depending upon the golf shape needed. I don't hit either one of them a ton, probably 160ish for the iron, and 170ish for the hybrid. As you mention, often use the 5 as a punch out. I don't get the sort of height I want to on the iron, but feel that I have a little more control on the left/right aspect than with my hybrid. I'll often use the 5 on the tee for par 3's because the tee gives me that confidence that I can get it in the air with something other than a screaming bullet that will run through the green. If there's no trouble in front of my target and I think the ball can run too the green, I'll use it there too. If I want to get the ball up and the missing left/right is less of a concern than what's in front of me, then I'll use the hybrid.
