I'm a pretty short hitter for my size cause even though my right side is stronger, I swing/bat lefty. No clue why, it just feels more comfortable and I have better accuracy.

I track all my swings with my GPS watch.

I keep three sets of numbers, overall average, anything hit above a normal mishit distance, and anything hit in my sweet spot range. For example, I throw out any mishits for my driver that do not travel 225 yards (assume I'm playing into a stiff wind, hit high or low on the face, or smack a tree). Also, the same driver I count all shots between 225 and 290 (my sweet spot, which throws out any downhill, downwind or absolutely perfect swings). I also track the general number of swings with each club.

I finished this year:

Driver: 250.9, 253.4, 250.5 (275 swings)

3 Tour Spoon: 228.2, 238.7, 238.7 (19 swings) - as you can see, I never was consistent with this club

3W: 236.0, 242.1, 235.4 (72 swings) - threw out anything below 220, roughly 15 swings

4W: 229.3, 232.3, 224.7 (8 swings)

5W: 223.4, 224.4, 224.4 (25 swings) - one of my most consistent clubs and I continue to pull it for a 2/3 hybrid for more versatility that I don't get

3U: 217.6, 217.6, 213.5 (12 swings) - my impulse buy after the Masters when Adam Scott had this in the bag (off the tee deadly, off the fairway...I can't hit a 3 Iron consistently)

2H: 208.7, 222.0, 222.0 (3 swings) - my brother gave this to me at the end of the year to play with (too early to tell)

3H: 208.0, 217.8, 211.1 (35 swings) - I try to keep this in my bag but I'm so inconsistent with it (hit shots as short as 173 as far as 253)

4H: 204.7, 208.5, 203.1 (51 swings) - this is an interesting one, after I reshafted an Adams A7 I lost my distance gap between my 5 iron and hit it 8 yards further than my TM RBZ Tour (I can also play my hands forward on this one and stretch it to 220+ off the deck and tee)

4H2: 196.8 (12 swings) - there was no reason to take this out of the bag, but I did for the Adams A7 with a Diamana HY92 (I need to just keep this in the bag)

5H: 189.7, 194.9, 190.4 (27 swings) - Since the Adams A7 21 degree went too far, I picked up a 24 degree to close the gap on the above (but silly me put a blue board HY82 instead of the white board HY92, which will change for next season, again showing there was no reason to pull the TM RBZ Tour since it was gaped perfectly, but I like the A7 heads feel much better, I wanted 5 more yards on this club)

4I: 189.3, 193.6, 193.6 (18 swings) - I hit the hybrids so much better, not sure why I keep putting it in the bag

5I: 183.1, 185.8, 184.4 (27 swings)

6I: 178.3, 178.3, 175.3 (30 swings)

7I: 163.0, 162.0, 163.1 (41 swings)

8I: 156.3, 157.8, 153.3 (66 swings)

9I: 140.2, 140.7, 137.6 (46 swings)

PW: 128.7, 129.3, 125.7 (54 swings)

50: 116.4, 117.2, 112.9 (28 swings)

55: 101.6, 102.6, 99.1 (21 swings)

60: 72.3, 74.7, 74.7 (3 swings)

Pitching/Short Game Shots

I have two shots with each club, hands forward punch, and hands neutral (I love these shots), keeping same 3 numbers above

PW Fwd: 137.1, 143.4, 136.7 (39 swings) - most of these are 1/2 to 3/4 swings

PW Ntl:   101.7, 121.2, 104.5 (9 swings)

50 Fwd: 96.4, 105.8, 103.7 (14 swings)

50 Ntl: 85, 88.3, 88.3 (4 swings)

55 Fwd: 87.1, 98.4, 104.5 (27 swings)

55 Ntl: 67.7, 70.1, 65.5 (33 swings)

60 Fwd: 62.0, 66.5, 57.0 (5 swings)

60 Ntl: 46.3, 46.3, 45.0 (15 swings)

60 Flop: 32.0 (3 swings)

D:      Titleist 913 D2 (10.5, Stiff, Diamana D+ 62 / Tipped 1/2 inch)

F:      TaylorMade RBZ (15.0, 43 inches & 19.0, 42 inches, Fujikura Rombax Type-X, 75S)

H:      Adams A12 (21 degree, 40 inches, Diamana HY92, Stiff)

I've played the same course every weekend (usually Saturday AND Sunday) for the last 3 years. I play as a walk-on single every time, so I have played with probably 500 or so people. I don't think I've seen more than 10 people drive it over 260 in all that time. The ones I remember were a college kid who played some amateur circuit, and 2 guys that played in college. Probably 90% of the folks I played with hit it between 220 - 240, including roll; with the majority being closer to 220. I can sit at the 381 yard par 4 all day and I bet less than a 25% of the players reach the 150 marker. Some of these courses have the yardage WAY off. I usually drive it about 220-230 and I'm a 9 handicap; been as low as a 7 once. It's about course management and short game, forget about the distance ego.

What's interesting is that I hit my 9i 140-145, PW 130-135 and hit my drive about 240. These guys that drive 280 are 10-15 yards shorter on those clubs. The math doesn't add up.....

If you carry a 9i 145 yards, it would correspond with a 110 mph driver swing speed which should give you a 264 yard driver carry or about 280 yards total distance.

On the other hand if you have 20 yards of roll and 125 carry with your 9i, then everything makes sense.

I play with Mizuno MP-64's and a Taylormade R9 driver (10.5 degree), and my 9 iron carries between 155-160, but my driver only carries around 270.

It means you have a swing speed of 114mph with a driver for a carry of 270, and a 9i that should be 150. You get an extra boost of 8 yards with your 9i.

I am kind of wondering how you measure the 270 carry to that degree of precision. Are you sure you are not carrying 280 or a bit more?

What would you say my ss is? Not been measured for a while, I'm not a big hitter though! My drives are 225yrds, (I use a stiff in my driver though I should be a reg) And my 7i is 145yrds! ( with a reg) These are total inc roll out

I can carry it 280+ if I went all out, but I would rather lose 10 yards and gain much better accuracy. I don't do the same with my shorter irons since they're easier to hit.

I can't say what he's doing but I hit shorter clubs much farther and higher than a driver in relation to everyone I know.

Normally guys that are 10 to 20 yards longer than I am with a driver are a club or two shorter with short irons. That has caused some funny situations on tee boxes when somebody asks me what I hit on an iron shot and then they try to use the same club.

One young guy that was longer than me with a driver hit four balls in a row into the water, and got more and more mad with each shot, trying to prove he could use the same club I used.

For the record I would trade places and take the longer drive any day. At least I would have the option of using more club on approach shots. There isn't an option for me to get that extra 20 yards with a driver.

That's more or less what I figured. You still fit into the data. You're normal (at least your golf swing ;-) ).

    • Day 133 (25 Apr 24) - Worked with the Divot Board today added a piece of cardboad behind the ball to help reinforce ball first contact. Contact improved through the round.   Added grandson's football goal posts about 10yds out to add a good start line visual Good session today.
    • Day 120: 4/25/24 Full Speed Spectrum training session. Low energy today and my speed was lower than normal. Will see what I can do on Saturday.
    • Day 541, April 25, 2024 Ten minutes after lessons. Still not caught up, but should be by tomorrow evening.
    • Playing irons only may lead to some short-term gains, but you'll want to at least practice with the driver if you ultimately have some decently good goals.
    • He plays from 68.3 / 124.  A combo tee setup of normal mens and seniors.   I play from 69.7/127.   He left after taking a triple on 14 and then leaving.  Which plays to what I think his plan is,   He doesn’t stroke on 14 but would have to take bogey for non completed holes on the way in.   Maybe that’s giving him too much credit, but he found a way to add 4 shots to his score over three holes so….     I looked up his last 20 rounds in GHIN and he has a lot of rounds at easier courses (rating and slope) that are higher than his normal rounds at home.   Since I mostly have his front nine score during the match (36) to go on, he has three nine hole scores at our course posted that are 41-43. I wrote the whole thing up to the head of our golf association who runs all the tournaments.  Our pro is not involved officially in the tournaments because the golf associations are separate from the club.   He’s pretty well known for this, however I was pretty shocked at how well he played carrying a 15.   I think eventually they will do something, a lot of people have complained.  The golf association threw someone out a couple of years ago and it was a three month situation where the guy retaliated.  They probably are hesitant to go thru anything like that again.  That is a rather crazy story I might post about later.
