How far do you hit your irons? I'm still trying to figure out distance on my longer irons, my increments between those clubs is still a bit foggy.

pw-120
9i-140
8i-150
7i-160
6i-170
5i-3i still dialing these in...

yeah, i know i should get some hybrids...

"Just hit the freakin' ball."

this isn't THAT fair of a question because of the wide gap in iron lofts these days...you buy a set of nike forged blades, and its 9 iron will have the same loft as a game improvement set's PW. right now, i'm working on hitting more than one club to the same distance (they say that tiger can hit 5 different clubs to the same distance). i won't list all of mine, but with my "standard" swings, i hit my 47 degree PW 125, a 39 degree 8 iron 155, a 27 degree 5 iron around 190, and my 21 degree 3 iron 210-215.

i'm sure there are people on this forum who hit their irons the same distances as pros do...is there anyone here who hits a comfortable 5 iron in the 210 range?

I was just going to ask this question.

Except I wanted to know what 'average' is for irons. I notice on some forums people can tend to get a bit... generous with their personal numbers.

I have a slower swing spped with my irons, much slower than my woods (which are faster than my driver oddly enough). I think on average I only swing about 85 MPH with my irons (last I checked at a shop with a launch monitor).

I thought I was losing my mind when I noticed I didn't hit my Cleveland SG4's much further than my Big Bertha 04's. Then someone on this forum enlightened me as to the loft differences in the clubs.

Right now I think you could easily take about 10+ yards off of each of your distances for my 'playing' distance. What I mean by that is I don't hit my PW too far over a 100 yards because I become inaccurate. At the range? Sure I'll pound it further but where it goes is anyone's guess.

I have trouble figuring out how far I hit my long irons as well. Like you I have no Hybrids and I'm considering replacing my 2, 4, 5 irons with Hybrids. (Not sure I'd miss the 3 iron to be honest (I'm not accurate enough to dial in that kind of distance every time).

Yea, so I'd like to hear what is considered average for irons as well.

I was just going to ask this question.

every golfer is undoubtedly different, but i think an 'average' player may use a 6 iron to 150. possibly a 7 iron? you'll get different responses in all sorts of different groups, i'm sure. you ask a bunch of single digit guys in their 20's, and i'm sure they'll mostly will be hitting 8 or 9 iron to 150.

i agree with your "playing" distances...i've jacked a 7 iron to 180 before (cart path only that day, misread the yardage as i was getting out of the cart, walked across the fairway, and was too lazy to go get another club), but over the long run, i know that wouldn't work out.

guys, I hit my irons wayyy too far. they are walmart clubs, and i"m wondering if the loft is too steep. i hit my pw 150 yards. I don't swing too hard, but every club after that is the same. 9 can go about 175, 8 about 210.

Sorry to thread-jack, but I have some property on the moon I'm selling real cheap. Two acres of prime real estate. Kind of dusty, commute sucks, no air, vast temperature changes, but the view is great.

I second that notion. I've been known to hit my driver a quarter mile into heavy winds.

I'd love to see this..wow.

My tendancy is to club up though for this.

so which one is it? in the other post it was :

PW - 175 9 - 200 8 - 225

I guess it's easy to get mixed up if you pulling these numbers out of your ...

Or did you work out and added 25 yards on each club within last 40 minutes?

Average distances (honest)--could be +15yrds or -20
SW 80
PW 110
9 125
8 135
7 145
6 155
5 160
4 150
3 120

(hehe, anybody else notice how the "average" long iron distances should really be less than the "average" 6-iron distance?)

I need those Walmart irons...

Here's my average carry in Arizona.

L-80
S-95
G-110
P-120
9-130
8-140
7-150
6-160
5-170
4-180
Hybrid-195
5 wood-210
3 wood-225

However I noticed I was about 1-1 1/2 clubs short in North Carolina but I'm about 2 clubs longer when in Salt Lake City.

I had the same problem. I had clubs I bought from the Dollar Store and my PW was going about 210 yards, in the wind. Then I switched to Titleist and now I'm back to 130 yards. All I can say is... whew!!! Thank God.

...see, that's the weird thing--we're about the same from SW-8 iron, but then some of you guys just start roping your mid/long irons past me. My driver distance is probably only 10-20 yards behind yours, but it's those 160-210 yard shots that separate my 13 hdcp from your single digit.

any advice? tried all the hybrids and really don't just want to ditch my long irons in the closet...they look so nice! but they feel so bad!!! (maybe this should be a long/iron swing thought thread instead)

Stack System’s marketing materials inflate apparent swing speed and distance gains through selective presentment of data without qualification that purported gains are not the result, in whole or part, of its training protocol and products. * Yes, I'm joking about abbreviating both "SS." SuperSpeed wants: A judgment that the Stack System has disseminated false and/or misleading information in violation of federal and Illinois law. The deletion of all false advertising distributed and recall of all packaging containing false advertising and a requirement that Stack System issue notices (written or otherwise) to that effect to all current distributors and retailers of its products and all distributors with whom Stack System has done business in the past eighteen months. Written confirmation within 30 days of an injunction detailing the manner and form in which Stack System has complied. An order that Stack System disseminate corrective advertising informing consumers, the trade, and the public of Stack System’s unlawful conduct. 3X all profits received by Stack System as a result of its unlawful actions. 3X all damages sustained by SuperSpeed (as a result of Stack System’s actions) The cost of the action All reasonable attorney fees All other relief to which SuperSpeed are entitled and such other or additional relief as just and proper. Oy.
    • I'm not doing this for the hundred and twentieth time. Sorry in advance, but you get the massively abridged version. Those guys also benefited from the weaker/shallower fields. Also, Watson's career doesn't overlap with Jack's like many think it did. Tom is nearly a decade younger. Jack won only like four majors only after Tom won his first. And Tom won more British Opens than he did all three of the other majors combined, as it was his specialty (not Jack's). Arnie's career similarly doesn't overlap Jack's as much as many think.   Jack would also tell you Tiger was the better golfer.
    • Weaker depth of fields for sure. Some of the top level guys with Jack were pretty awesome. Tom Watson had the lead on the 72nd hole of the 2009 British Open, an event where Tiger missed the cut. Old Tom was almost 60 years old. Jack himself at age 58 finished Top 10 at The 1998 Masters and scored better than Tiger, who won The Masters by 12 shots just a year before that.   The success of both Tom & Jack in older age gives some hope that maybe Tiger can find the magic again at some point. He’s still trying to figure out how to build the stamina for 72 holes after the leg injury. I would love to see him jump on the leaderboard in the coming years. I know a lot of people have given up on him at this point, but that was also true from 2014 to 2017 with the back injuries. He had a hell of a resurgence in 2018 & 2019. Would be fun to see it again.
    • Perceptive rules question by caddie unlocks Tour pro’s ‘dead zone’ relief A perceptive rules question by Xander Schauffele’s caddie, Austin Kaiser, unlocked “dead zone” relief during the Wells Fargo Championship.
    • I ran across an interesting new clip, Johnson Wagner went into that spot with the Referee who allowed the relief.  Apparently there was a perfectly reasonable shot to be made, as Johnson clearly demonstrated, so relief from the TIO was perfectly appropriate.
