2 Iron on Tour

What tours players still use a 2-iron? I'm pretty sure Tiger and Sergio still do but I'm not aware of who else does.

I want to try and convince my dad to let me use one instead of spending $150+ on a hybrid when I have no problems puring a blade 2-iron 220+ yards dead straight.

Sorry to break your heart about the 2 iron, but unless you are a scratch golfer and can hit the same exact spot more than 3 times, you should not be using a 2 iron. It would actually hurt your game. Think about hitting the 2 iron vs the hybrid out of the rough. You should trust your fathers judgment. Also there is more PGA pros not using a 2 iron vs a hybrid.

I disagree somewhat with the guy above. If you feel comfortable hitting the 2-iron, you should stick with it. I do agree the hybrid would be better out of certain situations, but we all know confidence plays a huge part in the game of golf. If you are going to feel more confident in the 2-iron, go with it.

I think there were a few in the bags at the Mercedes earlier this year, but I can't think of who they were offhand. I know Tiger and Sergio weren't there.

Tell your dad to put the money aside and give you a few months to make up your mind - if you find the 2-iron costing you shots, let him get you the hybrid. Otherwise, tell him to use it to get a tee time for two (you and him) at a top-notch course in your area.

I feel that everyone should use a hybrid including talent. If its a choice between hybrid and 2 iron for Tiger--he'd be an idiot not to use hybrid.

Given that Tiger can get the ball-flight he wants from a traditional 2-iron and not from a hybrid, switching to a hybrid would be a bad move for him.

About 12 years ago a friend gave me a set of Titleist blades and the set had a 2 iron. I loved that iron and could hit it a mile. I have since been thru a few sets of cavity back game improvement type irons, presently a set of Taylormade Rac OS about 4 yrs old. Naturally I ordered a 2 iron when I bought them as I had always had good luck with them. I noticed about 2 years ago it started getting tuff to hit correctly. I began to slice frequently and had to raeally work at it to hit a good shot. Then came the wave of the hybrid. I now carry a Taylor Made Burner 3 and 4. My locker has the 2 and 3 Iron all last season! I am presently looking at going back to forged irons, either MP 57 or 60 Mizuno or Titleist AP2's. If you can hit a 2 iron thats cool, but it is a lot of work!

Nobody is going to call you a girl for using a hybrid. Many of the top players in the world carry a hybrid. THey are more forgiving, just as workable, and will have a much better ball flight.

In the end however, it is all in what you hit best.

Hybrids are better for getting the ball up, and it'll also cost you a lot of workability. It's designed for people who a) hit the ball all over the clubface or b) those who have trouble getting the ball up in the air with longer irons (slower clubhead speed). It doesn't work for everyone - whatever gives you the most confidence standing over the ball, use it.

I don't get why people so aggressively push hybrids - some even say have nothing longer than a six iron. I'm left out in the rain, wondering out loud how these things can possibly be the answer-all for all golfer's problems.

Your best bet is to go with what YOU want. If you want the 2 iron you will feel disappointed having got a hybrid and more than likely not enjoy hitting it and therefore end up not using it!

With regards the likes of tiger woods using a 2 iron instead of a hybrid, seeing as he is the BEST player in the world, perhaps ever, i feel that he more than anyone is entitled to pick whats best for his game. A 2 iron is easy to work left righ, and to keep under the wind if necessary, these are all things a hybrid is designed to fight, which is one of the reasons i don't use one.

If you find ureself in a situation where you need to hit a 2 iron out of the rough, i wouldn't be using a hybrid in the firsts place, rather something like a 7 iron and layiing up and then pitching on, much much safer!

Once again, it definitely comes down to preference, and I love hitting "irons." There is just something about hitting a crisp iron shot that makes me feel good about playing the game of golf. I have tried a couple hybrids, and I've hit them well. However, I won't be replacing my 3I-PW anytime soon.

I read it many times regarding why Tiger is not changing to a hybrid. It is because of his spin rate. Tiger prefers to use the 2 iron for his "stinger" move as well. When he tested out a hybrid his ball tends to fly too high.

So to answer the original question, I really think you should use what is comfortable for you and depending on your abilities. Some use 2 iron, some use a hybrid and some use 5 wood.
